to filter the images in your library that have been edited but not necessarily tagged with flags, stars, or numbers?

I have approx 15K images in LR 1.3 and I didn't like how I performed my original import so I started over with LR 2.' and re-imported my 15K images with a new folder structure.

Now I want to find out if I can somehow filter only the images I edited (crop, sat, levels, etc) in LR 1.3 and somehow get those files into my LR 2.' library? I probably have approx 15'' images I edited in LR 1.3 but they're not necessary tagged with stars, flags, or ratings...I don't want to re-import my LR 1.3 library into LR 2.' because I'm scared it will result in tons of duplicate files....

Does anyone know if there is a simple way to filter only those images with edits in LR 1.3 and transfer only those images into my LR 2.' library?

Thanks in advance.
Brett

Ooooh, good question Brett.

So are those files in the same folder structure and already in your 2.' catalog? Or are the original files duplicated on your hard drive?

Initial thoughts - in 1.x, you can go to All Photography and sort by Edit Time or Edit Count, would throw all of your edited files to the end so you could select them. Or if you allowed 2.' to upgrade that catalog (without merging with your 'correct' catalog), in the Metadata Browser is an option for 'Develop Preset' and differentiate between 'Default' (unedited) and 'Custom' (edited).

Victoria,

My libraries for 1.3 and 2.' are completely separate and located in different folders on my drive.

I highlighted "all photographs" on the library tab, grid view, and selected sort by "edit time" and "edit count" but my edited files did not show up in the end or beginning of the grid view....they were still mixed in with the other files with no apparent order. I can see the little symbols in the bottom right hand corner of the images i edited (develop adjustment box or crop box) but they do not sort to the bottom or top of the collection in grid view...

Any suggestions? I would think there would be a way to sort by the images that have edits but it doesn't appear to be working...

Next question, if I have to manually go through my 15K images and add the edited images to a collection then how do I get that collection into LR 2.'?

Thanks for your help.

Ok, try this.... backup first, of course.

Open LR 2.' and go to File > Open Catalog. Point to your 1.x catalog and it'll ask if it can upgrade. Say yes, and it'll create a COPY called xxx-2.lrcat next to your 1.x catalog, and it'll open it up. Your 1.x should still be untouched.

Go to the Metadata Browser and in one of the columns select 'Develop Preset'. That will then show 'Custom' (ones you've changed) and 'Default' (ones you haven't). You can then mark them, move them to another location, or do anything else you like to them.

Depending on how you're planning on moving the data into your new catalog, one option might be to select all of the edited ones and use Export - as Original - to export them to another folder ready to import to your fresh tidy catalog, moving into your existing new folder structure. That will take most of the data along in XMP. Alternatively you could select all of those photos and choose Export as Catalog to export them all to another location with their full catalog data, and then use Import from Catalog to import them into your fresh tidy catalog, and then manually move them into the correct folders.

Victoria,

Forgive me for being so clueless but I can't find the "Metadata Browser" you're referring to...I was able to convert/open my 1.3 catalogue in 2.' and that's where I'm at right now.

I'm working in grid view under the library mode and the only metadata options I see are up top: Text, Attribute, Metadata, None....when i click on Metadata it gives me only 4 columns - date, camera, lens, label. I don't see a develop preset column anywhere....please help.

Thank you for your patience...

Thanks
Brett

Sorry, wrong terminology! I'm getting confused between versions. I means the Metadata filters, which you've found. Those 4 columns - click at the top of the first one, where it currently says date, camera, lens, or label, and change that to Develop Preset.

Okay, I found it. I had to "add a column" and choose develop from the menu and it added my column for me...

This helped and it isolated about 5'' photos in the "custom" sort for me but there are still several hundred other photos in the default sort that have been edited.

so it's looking like I'll have to go through manually and add all my edited photos to a collection. If I do this then you say I'll be able to export all photos in my collection(as originals?)into a folder and import those into LR 2.'?

Thanks
Brett

Okay last question re exporting....

If i'm able to get my edited photos into a quick collection and I highlight them all and choose "export", then you say I should choose "original" from the "format" pull down menu?

Does it matter if all my files were convered to DNG's during import?

My goal is to import all these images into LR 2.' and have all of the edits (crop, hue, levels, etc) carry over from LR 1.3....is there anything special I need to know when importing them into LR 2.'? Right now the only way I've been importing is choosing "convert to DNG and copy" and I have LR organize them by date "2''8-12-1'"..

Thanks for all your help Victoria.

Brett

Edited in what way Brett?

Anything that doesn't have 'Default Settings' is edited, but those with 'Default Settings' in that column have the default settings still applied.

Selecting 'Original' format just exports them in their current format without baking in the changes you've made - those settings are recorded as XMP and should be read by the new catalog when you import as you've been doing (although just pick 'copy to new location' rather than 'copy and convert to DNG'). Be aware there are certain things that can't be stored in XMP - flags, collections, and virtual copies being the main ones. All of your Develop settings will be included though.

You could test a small batch before you do the whole lot.

Victoria's answering your questions directly, but it does strike me that you're overcomplicating the whole thing by confusing folder reorganization with changing over to LR2, and it'll be very easy to end up losing some files or some work. The more you mess around with identifying those images you've worked on, and dealing with them separately, the more the chance of error. Open the LR1.3 catalogue in LR2, and LR2 will create a new catalogue with all the files. If you then want to change your folder structure and perhaps delete some files, do it in LR2 - LR2 makes it easier to identify which images you've worked on (smart collections). If you want to convert to a DNG workflow, do so after you've moved your images/work safely to LR2 - there's a menu option or do an export of everything and then import the DNGs in a date folder structure. And backup everything so you can guarantee that you can get back to where you were.

Victoria/John,

Thanks for your suggestions....my LR 2.' does not appear to be sorting properly by "develop adjustments". You'll see in the screenshot attached that I have "default settings" highlighted under "develop preset" and there are still tons of images that been edited/adjusted in this view (they have the crop box or development adjustment box in lower right corner). What I mean by edited is that the photo has been cropped or has been adjusted in the development module (basically all the photos with the little boxes on the lower right corner of the image - crop box and development adjustment box). Within the default settings sort I have both unedited and edited (or adjusted) images.

I was hoping that I could isolate all images that have either the crop box, or the develop adjustment box. I don't care about keywords.

If I'm doing something wrong let me know. Otherwise, thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, I see what you mean, I wouldn't expect such a high number to still be marked as Default Settings. If you look in the Develop module, do those files definitely have difference Develop settings. That's certainly not quite the result I was expecting!

Oh, actually, John's absolutely right, try creating a Smart Collection to show 'Has Adjustments' is true and 'Cropped' is true and see if that gets you closer. I didn't realise those were in the SC options!

This helped me out -

"try creating a Smart Collection to show 'Has Adjustments' is true and 'Cropped' is true and see if that gets you closer."

Thanks for your support.

Brett

Excellent! In that case, nice one John!

Well you know how much I love my smart collections!

Hopefully my note of caution also came through strongly. The original poster's conflation of switching to LR2, weeding out rejects, reorganizing his folder structure, and switching to DNG, seemed a recipe for disaster. With many programs in different fields, I've always found that the easiest way to trip yourself up is by being too clever and trying to take too many steps at once. Mao put it well - the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
