Is the Following LR Operation Possible?

I have a Folder with several images. I'd like to duplicate a subset of these in a Collection so that I can work on them independent of the Folder images. In doing this I'd not like to increase my HD storage space. Seems that creating Virtual Images is the way to go.

Can I sever the coupling between the source image (in the Folder) and its virtual image (in the Collection) so that the virtual image, or changes to it, does not appear in the Folder?

Perhaps there is another way to accomplish this in LR ?

Gerry, Collections are just references to images or virtual copies in folders. They do not contain images as folders do. If you make a change to a virtual copy in your Collection, it will be reflected in the virtual copy in the folder. If you delete the virtual copy from the folder, it will also disappear from the collection...

The only way seem to make duplicates of your originals.

EDIT: You can hide the virtual copies beneath originals by stacking them. Would that do it?

Thanks. As I suspected.
My interest in deleting Virtuals from the Folder was just to reduce clutter. Perhaps stacking, as you suggest, would be a good approach.

To reduce clutter, you can set up a filter on the folder that shows only originals, not virtual copies.

And if you don't use the VC Filter, you can close all the Folder stacks the VCs are in with the Master Images (set when they are created) by using 's' in Grid. 's' again the re-expand them.

Working in collection is great, but i don't understand why i can stack to original in collections? It works well in the collection "all photographs" but not in other collections. I use collection all the time, and after finding my picks i want to develop them, and that is when i want to stack the developed images with the original raw file.
Today i have to add a keyword, filter them out and then i can stack with original hmm?
