Is it possible to import from PSE7 to LR2.1?

Adobe Photoshop Elements import ?

Can’t find an option in LightRoom 2.1 to import Photoshop Elements 6/7 (*.psedb) catalogue files.

I've looked everywhere.. Surely Adobe supports this?

Welcome. And actually AFAIK, there is no direct import form PE6/7.

I have Lightroom 2.1 and want to import a catalog of 17''' files from Photoshop Elements (PSE) 7.'.

Curiously, it appears that Adobe provides possibilities for importing from PSE6 or lower, but I have PSE7.

The help manual appears to imply that if you have PSE6 or below, you'll get an option in the File menu of LR2 to import PSE catalogs. But, in my case, I have PSE7, and I see no such menu item.

Is there a way to import a Photoshop Elements 7.' catalog (.psedb file and related data) into Lightroom 2.1?

It certainly seems odd JCincotta. Maybe one for a feature request? In the meantime, would downgrading to PSE6 temporarily work for you?

In the meantime, welcome to the forum! I've merged all of the related threads, otherwise the conversations end up split all over the place.

This info comes, I hope, better late than never: PSE 7 came out after LR 2, so LR 2 cannot import PSE 7 catalogs. Unfortunately, incompatabilties like this can happen because product release cycles don't always synch up. You can, however, edit LR photos in PSE 7. If LR doesn't recognize/find PSE 7 in External Editing Preferences, try reinstalling PSE 7.

Help,
I purchased LR2.2 specificly because I was told that my 54''' images were too many to manage in PSE3. I was told that the two programs worked together and I could easily import my PSE catalog to LR. I upgraded to PSE7 at the same time and have spent the last 2 weeks organizing my photos laboriously in it. (I decided that the stack feature would help me reconnect separated originals with their modified versions in PSE).
Now it appears that I cannot import them.
LR2.2 seems to have come out after PSE7 so the above argument that the timing was off doesn't seem to apply. What is up? I am pretty unhappy at the current time given what I was told up front by Adobe sales folks.

You can import your PSE3 catalog into Lightroom, if you had a PSE3 catalog.

By the way, whoever told you that PSE3 could not handle a catalog of 54''' images was wrong, and probably just trying to sell you a more expensive piece of software. Catalogs of over 5'K images have been reported running well under PSE. Adobe often tells people that PSE can't handle more than 1'K, and that is quite simply baloney.

Nevertheless, you may be able to export your tags and captions and GPS locations to your files from PSE, and then import the files that now contain tags (Lightroom calls them keywords), captions and GPS Locations into Lightroom, and Lightroom will recognize this metadata. You would lose your PSE collections/albums, version sets and stacks. To do this, in PSE7, select all of your files, and then select File > Write Keyword Tag And Properties Info To Photo. NOTE: this does not work with some types of RAW files and also has been known to fail without warning in rare occasions for .jpg files.

Lightroom 2.2, and the pending 2.3 update that is now on Labs, are bug fixes. They do not add support for importing PSE 7 catalogs.

We knew that already.

Perhaps you could address when importing PSE7 catalogs will become a feature in Lightroom.

That won't be up to Anita, Paige. New features are only usually added in X.' releases, so probably 3.'.

Evangeline, sorry to hear you were given incorrect information.

FWIW, it stuck me that the PSE7 catalog *may* be backwards compatible - maybe opening it in PSE6 would work, and then you could import. I have no access to PSE6 or 7 right now, so I can't check it, but it might be worth a try if someone does have access to both.

As far as I know, PSE catalogs are not backwards compatible. Strictly speaking, they are not forward compatible either, although they can be converted to newer catalog formats.

Victoria is correct. I cannot speak to when specific features will be added to apps, but it is safe to say, as Victoria did, that new features generally come with .' releases.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I plan to write the metadata info into my files and then import from the files to LR2.2 as dj_paige suggested. Unfortunately my PSE3 catalog isn't much help as I have already done extensive reorganization in PSE7 (Had all my computers and HD backup stolen in a house robbery last fall and had to reconstruct it mostly).
It is a disappointment that Adobe didn't design this better, but I will leave that there.
I am using the stacks feature of PSE to weed out duplicates in my mis-mashed files and reconnect originals. It is a nice feature for that.
I now think that most of my problems with managing my database come from my underpowered computer rather than PSE and I am upgrading the memory.
I thought about ditching LR2.2 but read a lot of positive feedback from folks who have PSE and now do most of their photo processing in LR2.2, so I guess I will keep it.
