Please Help

I have been using Lightroom on my XP machine since version 1.' and I am currently running version 1.31 I Have Lightroom set to backup my default catalog which contains about 12''' images weekly (The.lrcat file is about 16' MB), and have left the check integrity box selected.

In the past this has taken no more than a few minutes, but now, twice the checking integrity window has run for hours. The 1st time I interrupted it after about 3 hours, Lightroom crashed, and I was unable to view my images upon restarting it (On the right column I could see all my folders and keyword listed, but when I selected them the screen remained black. I could not import any new images, or edit any existing images) I tried opening up some of my backup databases, but they also appeared nonfunctional.

After that incident I uninstalled Lightroom and reinstalled Lightroom disposed of my database and reloaded all my images in a new default database. Fortunately I store my XMP data with the images so all I have lost is time.

After the initial upload I optimized the catalog under catalog setting without incident (It took no more than 1' minutes). When I next went to back up my catalog leaving the check integrity box checked it is seeming to check the integrity forever (I started this about 5:3' pm on 2/13, and as of 9:3'am on 2/15 I'm still checking integrity)

The integrity check appears to be running rather than locked up (the busy bar continues to scan across the window). In Task Manager Lightroom is running using about 315'' K of memory and almost no cpu time. Not much else is running, the system idle process has well over 9'% of the CPU time. (The computer has a Pentium D Dual core CPU with a clock speed of 2.8Ghz and 3GB of RAM). There has been no significant change in the hardware or software installation on the computer.

I am not going to have time to work on my photos again until tomorrow, so I am leaving the integrity check running, but if it is going to routinely take me days to backup my database and check it's integrity the program has lost significant usefulness.

Many thanks for any help or guidance you can provide.

Keith

Keith, welcome, take a moment while the integrity check is running and fill in your signature in the UserCP (top left of page). This will help us to help you.
Now, to your problem (and I was being funny earlier) this behaviour is not normal. Someone with Windows will no doubt respond shortly.

It definitely sounds like something odd is going on here.

I haven't been Windows based for a fair while, but a few standard questions for you...

I assume you've rebooted your computer?
Any other changes recently - like a Windows Service Pack, something like that possible?

What happens if you start a new catalog (hold down Ctrl on starting LR so you keep your current one), import a FEW of your images, and repeat the process? How many can you add before it starts to hang? I'm wondering whether it's falling over a particular image.

Well I let it go till yesterday, then ran into the same issue. This time i uninstalled lightroom then stripped all references from the registry, reinstalled it, and it appears to be working, though I have not yest tried to back up with integrity check. Thanks for your advise. If it locks again I will try to build a smaller catalog and see what happens.

Thanks again.

Keith

Had you tried replacing the preference file?

Note: Re-creating the Lightroom preferences files restores
settings to their defaults, so may need to help it find your catalog if it is not in the default location.

1. Quit Lightroom.
2. Rename the Lightroom Preferences.agprefs file (for example, to
Lightroom Preferencesagprefs.old) in the Documents and
Settings/[Username ]/Application Data/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences folder.
3. Start Lightroom. Lightroom creates a new
preferences file.

If the problem continues, the preferences file isn't the cause. To
restore custom settings, delete the new preferences file and restore the
original name of the previous preferences file.

Windows hides the application data folder by default, so if you don't see it:

- open Windows Explorer
- go to Tools > Folder Options > View
- click "Show hidden files and folders"
- click OK

You should be able to see it after that.
