I think Lightroom's photo management structure is still a "work-in-progress" and needs a bit more refinement before it is an efficient tool for managing a large number of images the main issue is that if your catalog is to large it imacts performance and if you have to many small ones they are hard to keep track of :shock:.
I currently have a large number of catalogs as I store my completed projects in their own catalog, however there is nothing more frustrating then opening Lightroom with one catalog only to realize that the image you need is in another so you then need to close and re-open with a different catalog.
At present, the library module contains the headings "Catalog, folders and collections" which are all directly related to the open catalog that the user has loaded.
My feature request would be to integrate a simple "Catalog Switcher" within the Library module, this feature would allow users to quickly and easily switch the catalog they are working on without needing to go to the file menu and restart the app.
I think this would solve a lot of the file handling issues as it would provide users with a simple outline of their entire catalog library from within Lightroom itself and in-turn would provide a much easier interface for loading catalog's "on-demand", the functionality could even be extended to include a quick summary of the catalog eg:
Catalog: Smith Wedding
Photo Count: 85
Size: 5''mb
Location: F:\temp\abcd
Status: Online
