I retain old photos on my iPhone and import them periodically to Lightroom using the rename panel from IMG_xxxx to iph7-xxxx. This works fine for me by preventing name collision in the Library but renders the duplicate file check during Import useless. When I import from the iPhone again and apply the same rename settings Lightroom doesn't realize it already imported the photos. Lightroom doesn't see them as duplicates because the filename in the Library from the previous import is now different than the iPhone name seen by the Import. Applying the name change before importing would solve this.

First, I am not a fan of renaming original files. If you import form the iPhone the original image file will always have a unique name. If you organize your folders by one of the default date naming schemes any image file with the same name will be imported to a different folder It is nearly impossible to have two files with the same name land in the same folder. Should this happen, the Filesystem will append a “-2” to the second instance of the same name.
Lightroom uses more than file name to detect duplicates So there are other issues afoot. Is the “Do not import Duplicate...” checkbox checked on the import dialog?
