Importing/Renaming RAW+JPEG

On occasional assignments I need to shoot RAW+JPEG and I would like to use LR to rename and backup both the RAW and (camera created) JPG files with the same file name, but respective file extensions. While I want these two files, as well as a DNG file created from the RAW file in my backup archive, I only want the DNG file in the LR catalog. Any workflow suggestions that could easily allow me to accomplish this? The DNG file will be further modified later on, and it will be backed up again, but I need a "baseline" archive of the three file formats (renamed) before I begin doing any other work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (I am considering using Image Ingester Pro, but I am not certain this will easily allow me to accomplish the task at hand.)

Perhaps one of the Lightroom gurus would have other thoughts but here's how I do it.

I use a combination of Downloader Pro from Breeze Systems and the free Adobe DNG Converter. Once I insert a memory card into my card reader, Downloader Pro detects the card and moves the images to a designated location, while renaming them during the move. DLP can be set up to call the Adobe DNG Converter and create DNGs during download, or to invoke the converter after the ingestion is complete. You can also configure it to save the different file types in seperate folders. When ingestion is complete I import the folder containing the DNGs to Lightroom and backup the other file types.

ImageIngester Pro is similar in functionality to DLP but DLP has specail features to interface with Canon cameras like the ability to synchronize your camera clock with your computer clock, etc.

I tried to post a detaled response, but the Bulletin Board software did not recognize me as being logged in and lost my lengthy post, so I will try to quickly summarize what I wanted to say.

Is there a way in LR to separate the JPG file from the NEF or DNG file when they were imported together? If so, then I could delete the JPG's from the catalog and be left with the DNG's, which is what I want. LR only shows one image with the caption showing two file extensions (NEF+JPG or DNG+JPG). I cannot seem to find a way to separate the two files. Any suggestions?

Under Edit > Preferences on the Import tab, check the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos". They should then be treated as different animals.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unofrtunately, if I treat them as separate photos, they will not be renamed the same since LR will sequence them rather than give them the identical names with different file extensions. For DAM purposes, they need to carry the same file name.

Let me take another stab at explaining what I am looking for:

Camera file: DSC_''1.NEF and DSC_''1.JPG

Newly desired name for files backed up and DNG created: YYYMMDD_ABC-#####.file extension (where ABC is a project code and the #'s are assigned on import and contiue to escalate through each import until they reach 99999).

Backup/Archive should contain:
YYYYMMDD_ABC-#####.JPG (this should be the camera JPEG, not one created by software)
YYYYMMDD_ABC-#####.NEF
YYYYMMDD_ABC-#####.DNG

LR only should contain:
YYYYMMDD_ABC-#####.DNG (this file will contain its own JPEG created by the DNG converter)

OK, will this work?

1. Import the NEFs and JPGs, asking Lightroom to rename them.

2. Within Lightroom, convert to DNG from the Library menu and choose not to delete the originals.

3. Remove the NEF+JPGs from Lightroom. The folder will still hold all three types.

I thought this might work, but it changes the thumbnail from NEF+JPG to DNG+JPG. Unless I am doing something wrong, it does not seem to be creating new DNG files, rather it seems to be changing the NEF to DNG? I may try this again tomorrow as time permits just in case I am not paying careful attention to what I am doing.
