importing presets

I have trouble importing downloaded presets/trial programmes.
Aftter downloading, go to LR/File/import presets. Locate and item. Click import, It tries importing then message "an unknown error has occurred" .
What have I missed?

You have probably downloaded old-version presets in .lrtemplate format. Lightroom 7.3 and higher uses a new format (.xmp). If that is indeed the case, then you will have to place these presets in rhe old location, so Lightroom can convert them. How to Install Presets in Lightroom 7.3 (April 2018 release)
