I am working through a "365 project" where I shoot a picture (and post it) every day. I import all my photos with LR2, do my basic work there and then export to CS3 for final work (blend modes, layers work, sharpening). The resultant PSD and JPG files are then saved in the daily folder that LR2 created. File structure is: 2''9/month/day

What I'd like to do at the end of each month is have LR2 go back to the 2''9/month folder and grab all the PSD/JPG files from each day and pull them into the catalog (so that I can then "Pick flag" them and create a special collection of my daily photos for the year).

Is it possible to tell LR to 'import from disk' and just send it to the 'month' folder and have it pull files from each 'day' folder without individually hand selecting each day (or worse, each PSD/JPG within those days) ? Will it search/import from subfolders?

Thanks! :)

I'm hesitant to "just try it" b/c I made a mess of things a week ago (LR seems to be not very intuitive to me), and this is something I don't have time to straighten out if it gets royally screwed up. :(

Last week, I shot a friend's child's bday part. Batch'd em in LR2 and told it to export to JPG and put in "this file." I then went and deleted the original NEF files b/c they wouldn't be needed any further. Burned to a disc and gave it to her. I had highlighted (in Loupe mode) the files I wanted converted/saved as JPG.

Well.......it only did the first one, and her CD only had 1 picture on it. Thankfully, I had not emptied my 'trash' and the NEF's were still in there. So I spent another hour today re-working it all.

After that fiasco, I'm not very trusting of things happening as I think they are. It seems to me, that if you have a group of things highlighted, that whatever you say to do should be done to all of them. From what I can tell, this only works in Grid view, and not Loupe. HOwever, I've not seen that explained anywhere in my books or online tutorials.

So now I'm gunshy. Not sure what else doesn't work as I interpret it to, and unwilling to make a mess of this 365 project.

It will import subfolders and there is an option to keep the structure or merge. You will see in the import dialog box the list of subfolders before comitting. This will give you a chance to uncheck those unwanted folders if any.

And if you want to play it safe, you don't have to test with your real files, or with your real catalog. Create a fake hierarchy of files, and import into a new catalog to test. Then if you like the results, throw away your test files and do it for real.

Synchronizing

I would just right-click on the year/month folder, and choose Synchronize. This will detect all images in the folder and subfolders that haven't been imported, and open up the Import dialog with them.
