importing offline files into LR from PSE?

in PSE7 i moved a lot of my files offline and there doesn't appear any simple way to get them back
i have a full backup in PSE5, just before i moved them offline
i want all my photos in LR 2.3
i have PSE5 & PSE7 and a full current backup of PSE7
what strategy can i use to get all my photos in LR?

Your files need to be "online" for LR to import them.

To move them back online, in PSE7, select the photo's thumbnail and then File->Move (move the file to an online drive).

You may have to consider the PSE5 back up to use as I don't believe that LR and PSE7 are compatible at this point.

i must be really dense
i select the pictures in the organizer
file|move
select reconnect (correct DVD in drive)
i get a window with the disconnected photos in the left pane, but in the right pane it is pointing to the preview directory and just a thumbnail
if i say reconnect, i just get the thumbnail moved, not the original!

Since I don't ever have the experience of moving files from "offline" to "online" in PSE, I can't help further (although I am surprised that "reconnect" is an option here ... seems to me reconnect is something different).

do i have to import my catalog from PSE?
if i write the tags etc to my photos & just import them into LR, will LR keep my tags?
