The book on page 31 talks about selecting a group of files by shift-clicking the first and last images. This doesn't work. How do I achieve a selection, please

In Library Grid View, you need to hold Shift down when clicking on the last image and all the ones between should be selected.

What are you finding?

Click first image, then Shift+clcik the last image. The first. last and all inbetween will be selected

You're talking about the Import dialog rather than the Library Grid, right? Did you note that you not only have to shift-click, but also then click one of the checkmarks to actually check them?
