Importing Canon RAW

Hi Tony, welcome to the forum!

Are you trying to import directly from the camera or through a card reader?

And which version of Lightroom are you using? Have you updated to the latest 1.3.1?

My initial thought is could some of them be in sRAW format, which wasn't supported in some earlier LR versions?

If you could post your machine specs in your signature, as many of us have done, it really helps give operating system and machine specific advise.

Tony, there is a persistent, well known bug with LR importing directly from cameras (Canon is frequently mentioned here). The work-around, of course, is a card-reader. Have you tried that?

When you say "LR fails to start". Do you mean it won't autostart when a device is connected, or do you mean that the program crashes/errors when you manually start it?

Thanks Brad...I'll try a card reader in the morning and see if that works. The LR problem is starting the program (not auto start) Tony

I think that will solve the import issue (card reader).
For the other issue, try opening LR by double clicking on the catalog file (.lrcat) where it resides its folder. A disconnect can occur, usually bey the folder being moved.
You can add your system details etc in the UserCP at the top left of the page, this saves having to repeat it.

Glad it helped.

It must be one of those things. Just once, in my entire career have I drug out all the cables and stuff to d/l directly from the camera, and principally I did that to play with tethered shooting.

For the life of me, I don't understand why anybody would do that, when card readers are cheap, easy, reliable, and a lot easier on the camera and batteries. But, clearly many prefer it that way, so I must be overlooking something.

Maybe it's like light beer vs. real beer. A matter of personal preference

I have to admit Brad, for the first time today, I hooked up my camera and pulled a few files off that way. But that was only because the card reader was in my bag on the opposite side of the room, and the cable was in the drawer next to me!

With LR, it seems, anyhow, that the Card Reader is the better, less buggy practice.
