Importing and Naming

I've looked through the file naming features.

I attach a card. The import dialog opens.

My custom settings cause the files to be imported as

company_DDMMYY_1.dng
company_DDMMYY_2.dng
company_DDMMYY_3.dng
company_DDMMYY_4.dng

etc.


Now when I insert the next card from the same shoot/same day, instead of continuing the sequence

company_DDMMYY_5.dng
company_DDMMYY_6.dng

as it should, watch what happens:


company_DDMMYY_1_2.dng
company_DDMMYY_2_2.dng
company_DDMMYY_2_2.dng
company_DDMMYY_4_2.dng


Which completely screws up the naming scheme. I know this happens because the first filenames are already in use, and so some other naming engine takes over.

What can be done?

It seems my scheme is the simplest most practical scheme in the world. Can lightroom accomodate, or should i continue with microsoft expression?:shock:

When you insert the next card you have to change the starting number in the sequence to the next available number. That will resolve your problem.

The other thing you could do is add import number into the naming convention so you would end up with:

company_DDMMYY_1_1.dng
company_DDMMYY_1_2.dng
company_DDMMYY_1_3.dng
company_DDMMYY_1_4.dng

Then for the next card you should get:

company_DDMMYY_2_1.dng
company_DDMMYY_2_2.dng


The starting numbers are held under Catalog Settings on the File Handling tab.

If that doesn't help, what are the naming parameters you are using?

Mick also elaborated a bit more in this thread http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/showthread.php?t=631 . You may find it helpful. I know that I initially found Image/Import/Sequence a bit confusing.
