Importing a photo?

When importing a photo to Lightroom,can I just put it in an existing folder without first adding it to my light room pictures folder?

Yes. The option is called "Add photos to catalog without moving" and is the first one in the dropdown list of the first line titled: "File Handling:".

[/quote]But do this carefully. A mistake that some have made is leaving the images on a camera card. Once the card is removed and erased, the images are lost. I can think of only one reason to leave the images in place. If you already have a large inventory of images on the computer when you create a new catalog, and you are happy with the existing location, then import in place. If you are importing new images from the camera card, I think it is best to let LR do the import and copy the images to a location of your choosing. Initially LR suggests your "(My) Pictures" Folder and unless you have a compelling reason to locate the images outside of your user 'sandbox', I would recommend keeping them there.

Another option you have mrgooch is to import by moving to a new location and choosing the existing folder you want.

P.S.: Good advice from Cletus to avoid "current location" with CF cards...

As a rule, I ALWAYS, import my photos from my camera to my hard disc / external drive BEFORE importing them into Lightroom. That way I know my photos have made the journey from camera / memory card to my computer system and I know where they are.

Same here, plus make a second copy of them on another drive after copying from the card to HDD.

[/quote]What! Don't you guys trust Adobe and LR? LR does all this for you. No duplicating import effort. Importing from one file media to another just to import to LR seems redundant to me. I remove the card from my camera and stick it in the card slot on my computer and LR makes two copies. One for the catalog and one for backup. As a bonus, I get keywords, metadata and develop settings if I want 'em.

Nope. I like to do my basic file management my own trusted way. :)
