import to mac from pc metadata not showing up

Hi all... I have just copied over my catalog to my new mac book (from a pc). all seems to be ok. However, I am testing it, and when writing new metadata /crops/develops to the PC catalog, I try to export just those 9' images (export as catalog), via an external HD, and then import as catalog on the macbook, but the new settings do not show up in lightroom on the laptop (hope that makes sense!). I can see that the 'metadata status' in metadata panel has changed, but if I try to resolve the conflict, i get an error saying 'Writing XMP metadat' did not complete succesfully. Any ideas? I normally work with collections... would that make a difference (if I try to export from a collection?).... also, in future, if I want to sync with the laptop but dont do it for a few days and forget which folders Ive worked on, can i just export the whole catalog (44k pics!) and let LR work out which folders have changed?... many questions! Are there any "?" marks on your thumbnails? Mac do by drive names and Windows by drive letters. This should be fixed each time going from Mac to Windows...

Hi Dennis... yes there are ? on the thumbs when on the macbook. This is because I am using the laptop simply to look at previews and metadata... the 'negatives' are not 'plugged in'. So I built the copy of the catalog on the laptop, then changed some images on the original desktop and wanted to 'update' the same images on the laptop, but it didnt work. I have done some more tests, and when I tried the same thing with some more images yesterday, including some new images, only the new images were imported, and the metadata changes in the 'old' images was not changed. It seems the only way to update an image with changed meta/crops/adjustments is to delete the existing version and import a new version...?

If you only use the laptop to view and don't edit, then don't bother with select, export as catalog, import catalog sequence and simply copy the desktop's catalog over to the laptop.
