I should really know the answer to this one but it escapes me at the moment. When you import from a catalogue you get the option with new photo's to leave the images where they are or move them, that bit I understand. Th ebit I don't get is the existing photo's. You have three choices of 1) updating metadata only, 2) Develop and metatdata and 3) Updating metadata, Develop and negative files.
My question is what are the negative files? surely they are already being seen by LR so why would you want to update them?

Andrew

The negative files are the originals - so yes, generally you wouldn't want to overwrite them.

It also gives you the option of overwriting 'non-raw' originals only. I would assume that's because non-raw files (jpegs, tiffs, psds) may have been edited in other programs - retouching etc - and you might want to copy those retouched files, overwriting the previous ones.

Thanks Victoria,

I hadn't thought about edited JPEGS etc. as most of the time I use RAW.
