I am currently importing 125 photos into Lightroom 2 and it is taking a longer time than normal. Usually I can import a larger batch than this, and the thumbnails will pop up in seconds. Right now it's taking over 3' seconds per photo. Has anyone else experienced this? How can I fix this?

update

Well, the good news is that my problem isn't from lightroom! I was importing straight from a CF card, and best I can tell the problem may be with my reader. I transferred the files (very slowly) to my hard drive and the import went as quick as normal.

1. Initially you tried to import into LR direct from the card reader and it was slow...yes?

2. Then you uploaded the images direct to your C/drive (NO LR involved - still slow), and then imported into LR (quicker)...yes?

Also, few questions
a. Are they RAW files
b. Did you convert to DNG
c. What preveiws did you render on import
d. What is you computer system (aka: forum signature)

For me, if upload onto the C/drive (no LR), the process is fast, and its only direct import into LR with DNG conversion and preview rendering that is slow. I have had no issue with card reader speed.

Hi, welcome to the forum!

It does indeed sound like your reader. Is it USB or Firewire? I've seen USB readers which should run at USB 2.' end up switching to USB 1.1 on occasion, therefore running very slowly, so you may find that's to blame.

yes

I was importing from a Sandisk 4GB Extreme IV card on a Sandisk USB2 reader straight into LR2. That was taking forever, as if it was USB1, so I decided I was try a few things to narrow down where the problem was. First, I switched the cord, but found no improvement. Then I questioned if it might be my catalog, so I opened a new catalog, but no improvement. So, I decided to transfer all of the files to my external hard drive, and then import from there. The file transfer was outside of LR2, and took forever as well. I then questioned if it might be the CF Card. So, I tried downloading the CF card into my external Epson p4''', and it worked at normal speeds. My current conclusion is that the problem is with the reader. All of my file importing has been with Canon RAW CS2 files. I did not try converting to DNG. I used standard preview sizes.

How does a card reader switch from USB2 to USB1? Is it hardware related?

Yep, definitely sounds like your reader. Good bit of detective work Rick!

How it switches - it was on Windows that I saw it happen regularly, haven't yet seen it on Mac. At the time, I think there were a few possibilities - it didn't like running through a hub, it didn't like being plugged in next to another USB cable which was also drawing power, restarting the computer often fixed it, also seen a damaged cable cause problems. I'd just buy a new card reader personally! ;)
