Importing raw files from SD card, instructed Lightroom to import to external drive k:, importing is halted with screen message that one of my other (internal) drives not designated to receive imported files is almost full and files need to be removed from that drive to continue importing. Can anyone help me understand/solve what's happening here? Thank you.

Lightroom Stages import in the Working storage area (Usually the C:\TEMP folder). If there is not enough free space for working storage, LR can not write these temporary files. You need to keep at least 100GB of the primary drive free for temporary files for LR and all other applications that use working storage.
One other situation that may cause this is the "Make a second copy to". import option. If that destination volume is full or does not exist (Drive letter is disconnected). You may get this message.
