Import dialog box hides..... Windows

OK, this is a new one for me. When I import from disc, the standard "Import photos or catalog" dialog box opens. I select my files, click Choose, and nothing seems to happen. BUT, LR locks up, clicking anywhere in the program window gives me the Windows error sound.

Go to Task Manager, select LR, click "End Task", get the message "The system cannot end this program because it is waiting for a response from you". So I'm assuming the Import dialog box is hidden beneath the LR main window. Importing from my card reader works just fine.

Just noticed this tonight after installing a new monitor. So I re-installed the video card driver, re-installed LR and the problem persists. Can't remember when the last time I imported from disc, it may have been back when I was using 1.4 but I've never seen this on this machine with any program losing a dialog box.

So I'm open to suggestions, other than copying the files to a card and importing from that(I thought of that already). The new monitor is a NEC 269' , existing ATI RAdeon X195' Pro video card, latest drivers for both card and display.

Bill, you have some beauties !! Some PC person can help you out I'm sure. When I import from a catalog there are long periods when LR is "frozen", all I can do is shift the LR window around and do get the ding when trying to do anything within LR. The OS progress bar can be hidden behind the LR window but is still movable.

Let's assume it's a dialog box that's appearing somewhere.

Perhaps resize the LR window first so that it doesn't consume the whole screen.
When you believe the dialog is exposed, press Windows*-Alt-Spacebar, then press m, which should enable you to move the currently open window (hopefully the stuck dialog) around the display with the arrow keys. See if you can bring the dialog into view.


This has been know to happen on dual monitor systems with one monitor off/disabled/unplugged. Windows has never handled multi-monitors completely gracefully.

Geoff, my Windoze machines are usually pretty well-behaved, I've been fooling with them long enough to know most of the tricks! But this is a new one....:frown:

Brad, I had tried resizing LR down to as small as it will let me but no joy. I tried the Win-Alt-Spacebar -M and it brought up the window dialog box(which I couldn't get from right-clicking the LR box in the taskbar), I get the "move" cursor, as soon as I click'n'hold on the LR window it reverts to the standard arrow cursor and won't let me move the window. Just gives me the error sound.... No Import dialog box shows up.

The last time I imported from disk was before I upgraded to 2.', I remember because my copy of LR2 didn't ship until 8/19 from Adobe and I copied my files from the Wyoming trip from the iBook over the network when I got back on 8/1. So I still can't say for sure if this is a LR problem or something to do with the OS/drivers. Well, justdamn! :evil: And I don't think I'll spend the time to re-install 1.4 just to see if it works.......

The upside is that this monitor is absolutely fantabulous! Going from two 19" screens side-by-side to a 26" 16:9 is something I think I can get used to pretty quickly, even if I do have to copy files to and from a CF card to get them into LR. :mrgreen: Here's a screenshot:

Bill, I bet it started after you upgraded to the single monitor? I have had this happen after disabling one of my monitors.

The import window can get opened on the monitor you no longer have attached (if that makes sense) so follow Brad's instructions but don't try to click and drag the LR window, you want to drag the import window. Just drag the mouse and the import window should appear. It sometimes takes a couple of tries or use the cursor keys.

Mark, you nailed it exactly! I realized it this AM when I opened Quicken and it did the disappearing act, I remembered that I always opened it on the secondary display. Moving didn't help so I hooked up the old monitor, brought up the recalcitrant programs and dragged the windows back to the main display. Now all's right with the world! :mrgreen: (or at least the 292 square inches that's mounted to my wall)

Brad, go ahead and email me, I'll be happy to help if I can. I just got it set up yesterday and I've done some fooling around with some of the controls but I haven't received the Spectravision II disc from NEC yet, which is supposed to be the real thing for calibration/profiling. But I've had nice results so far using the iOne Match software with the i1D2 colorimeter.

I profiled at gamma 2.2, 65''K, 14'cd/m2 and I had to back 'way down on brightness and contrast, 27.2 and 51.5, respectively. I also cut Black Level - Main down from the default of 128 to 1''. This seemed to help with the Brightness setting, it was down to below 1' to get to 155cd/m2 before. Everything I've read says this monitor likes to be profiled no lower than 15'cd/m2, so I'll try it again when I get the SVII package.
