If I plug USB directly into Z8, I see both NEF and JPEG versions of each file in the Lightroom import dialogue and can’t figure out how to do the typical import where it’s NEF+JPEG - one file with JPEG image used to display underlying raw data. If I take the card out of the camera and use a reader, everything works perfectly. (So, not a Lightroom settings issue; treat JPEG as separate file is UNchecked). Any ideas on how to import in NEF+JPEG while plugging directly into camera? Thanks.

You may want to rethink your approach. The recommended import method is to never use the camera as a card reader. The camera battery is used to power the import. When this drains, unpredictable things can happen. Also your battery is good for only so many charge cycles. Why waste it on copying images off the camera card?

I've never used my camera as a card reader and never shoot RAW+JPEG. So I really can't answer your original question.

I think it would be a good idea to have the option on handling raw+jpg at the import dialogue stage (with , say, the default set to parameter setting).

Re USB direct cable.

The fear I had initially connecting cables directly to camera was the danger of frying the electronics because of powered USB cables. I suspect that may be well engineered by now, but for me... is still a risk. I have seen a situation saved where someone was able to charge their batteries using this method... so impossible to cover all bases with the same answer.

But a fear, which has persisted since then, is that a camera, with a cable connecting to a computer or a plug in the wall... is an accident waiting to happen, ie someone trips over the cable.
Repairing the USB socket on the camera may be a scary thought... and some laptops have so few ports that damaging one port may have a severe impact on laptop usability.

As someone who did a lot of travelling at various stages... finding time (and opportunity) to charge batteries was often a challenge.... so my preference was to import via card and use that time to charge my batteries.

Thanks for these thoughts. I too have also previously used a card reader exclusively. However, the Z8 has two USB ports- one dedicated to power and the other dedicated to data. That solves the charging/data issue and allows, for example, one to do tethered shooting while still powering camera. I understand about the electric mishap concerns but in (nearly) 2025, with USB2.0 and loads of other advancements, this seems more habit than avoiding a genuine issue. Upon reflection, I should probably just shoot raw and use relevant profile upon import as I don’t really utilize JPEGS and can always generate what I need from LR (eg for sharing with family).

I have just bought a travel amp/dac to be able to listen to music when travelling. I bought it because it has a usb c port for power/ charging and a separate USB C port to stream the music. Super to see this stuff evolve and mature in such practical ways in a small high quality package.

USB-C is taking over (finally!). I bought some hi Intensity rechargable flash lights they have USB-C charge ports. My 3rd party replacement batteries for my Nikon are rechargable with a USB-C port built in. If given a choice in rechargable appliances, I'll pick the one with the USB-C port over any others.

This has veered far from my question (lol) but yes, having everything USB2, including phone, is really great. Of course it will take the airlines 15 years to catch up !

You need to consider that the plane that you fly in is probably 30 years old. Recently, my wife and I got two new cars. Each came with a plethora of USB and USB-C ports not to mention built in magnetic chargers.

It is possible to change the USB ports without changing the wings ;). I’ll take them not ripping me off for terrible WiFi !
