Images look different in "fit screen" compared to "1:1" (Develop Module)

Hi

After spending some time editing an image in "Fit" size I got a rude shock on export. My problem is that my image looks completely different (colour-wise) when viewed at "Fit" size compared with 1:1 when in the Develop module. 1:1 looks very flat and if I make adjustments in 1:1 and then zoom out to Fit it looks terribly oversaturated.

Funnily enough when I export (using any colour space) to JPEG, or go to the Library module, the image looks exactly the same as it did in 1:1 (flat).

My preview quality is Medium.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Jonty, welcome to the forum!

Is it a heavily saturated photo, or one seriously affected by noise? If you could post a screenshot, that would help to narrow down what's happening, but I have a feeling it could be down to the resampling. We had another thread about that a month or two ago, with a lovely orangy swan photo, if I remember correctly.

Hi Victoria

Thanks for your reply. Noise doesn't seem to be an issue. It's the colours that are off. I have attached a couple of examples using Grab. The light one is what's seen in the library and also in Develop (when seen at 1:1) and the more saturated one (leftmost image) is the same image when viewed at Fit. The only edit I applied was to change the camera profile to Vivid (but any camera profile, even Adobe Standard, results in the same issue).

The funny thing is that some other photos don't do this. The third picture was taken the same night with the same settings and looks exactly the same in all views.

What color space are the images being exported with? That can make a difference if the program you're viewing the exports in is not handling the profile correctly.

They look basically the the same regardless of the export colour profile when viewed in Safari, Preview or Photoshop i.e. all like the middle image, none like the one on the left.

As a diagnostic exercise, please try setting your preview quality to High, then make a change and regenerate 1:1 previews.

The reason this might have an effect is that high quality previews are rendered in ProPhoto RGB while low and medium quality previews are rendered in Adobe RGB.

Thanks, tried that but no dice. It does it with another shot of orange fireworks, too, and even without any changes to the NEF.

Displayed at Fit size the image looks great, comparable to capture NX 2 and just like the colours I remembered, but at 1:1 again it is very desaturated and so are the exports unfortunately.

Okay, thanks for trying. We'll bark up another tree. I'll go looking for one. :-)

Hehe no worries, help is always appreciated.

As an exercise I tried another one, without any adjustments whatsoever and the effect is the same. Left to right they are: Library, Develop (fit), Develop (1:1).

If no-one else has this issue I might just reinstall and see what happens. New to LR but am loving it (fill light and clarity rock compared to NX 2).

Found a previous thread that discusses the same issue

Very annoying problem. If I want to show someone a slideshow I get the flat, desaturated image and the only way around it is to go to Develop and manually click through the images.

I wonder if it has something to do with the "feature" of not showing sharpening at anything other than 1''% view in Develop mode, leading to the unsharpened Fit screen view looking more saturated than the true image at 1:1.

I know sharpening is usually the last step in a workflow so from a performance point of view I can see Adobe's reason for this, but the thing is that the sharpening is clearly having other effects in some images that then needs further work in Develop mode. I wish there was a way around this :)

So remind me, which view shows the correct rendering? i.e. the same rendering as the exported image?

Library Fit
Library 1:1
Develop Fit
Develop 1:1

Try something for me.... select the photos in Grid view and go to Library menu > Previews > Render 1:1 Previews - and when it's finished, run the slideshow again. Better?

Hi Victoria

The views that show the same rendering as the export are: Library (Fit and 1:1) and Develop 1:1 (these are the leftmost images above). The one that is different is Develop Fit (the second image above in each example).

Tried rendering the previews but no luck unfortunately.

Edit: Went through all the photos for the night and this issue only arises with yellow/orange fireworks, all other colour fireworks are identical in all views. Strange, huh?

Ok, Library (Fit and 1:1) and Develop 1:1 are the correct renderings of the photos, so that's what you're aiming for, and that should be the same on Export and in Slideshow.

It's the Develop Fit view that's being affected by the resampling, and it is particularly the yellow/oranges, as you've noticed.

Correct. Do you think it has anything to do with my camera profiles or NEFs (have a D3'')? I take it you haven't had this issue with your photos?

I'll take some test pics of similar colours tomorrow and see what the go is.

I'm wondering if it's just a difference in the downsampling used by the two modules, coupled with the characteristics of these images. That is -- perhaps the downsampled fireworks in Develop end up being two pixels wide instead of one, making them look considerably brighter and more saturated against the sky than the Library version.

Any chance you can supply one of those raw files and the accompanying XMP data (or convert to DNG, and write out the XMP before uploading), so that we can see this?

On the Mac, my methodology would be as follows:
(1) Configure the Library and Develop modules with identical panels (and panel dimensions), so that the image area is the same size in each module.

(2) Fire up DigitalColor Meter (it's in the Applications/Utilities folder). Place it on the screen near the area you want to view.

(3) Viewing the image in Library at Fit, zoom in using the MacOS controls. I think by default it's configured to zoom in when you hold down the control key and scroll up with the mouse wheel, but that's configurable in the Mouse preferences. Be sure the "Smooth images" option is unchecked in there too.

(4) Carefully inspect the pixels in the affected area. Take notes. (I'm not sure whether screenshots will do the right thing while zoomed in, but maybe they will.)

(5) Switch to Develop and do the same thing. Compare.

Mark, check out #192'3''. (Everyone else, yes I know that doesn't make much sense!)

I have uploaded the NEF and XMP to here.

When I zoomed in on the Develop view it is as you described - the fireworks are a few pixels wider compared with the library version, but they are also more saturated. The Develop ones also have a line of black pixels at their margins. Not sure what to use the DigitalColor Meter for :)

So what does this mean then? Is this a Lightroom issue I'm just going to have to live with or is there a workaround? I guess I could survive it were just a couple of images because processing a 4'''x3''' image at 1:1 is a bit of a pain :)

Jonty can you either email me a file or put a link up where we might d/load it. There is something happening that ought not be but it may be one of your settings so let's try and isolate that.

Hi Geoff

Thanks, the link is here: click. There you will find the original NEF. The XMP from the DNG is there. I can upload the DNG if you want.

Cheers!

Yep the DNG will be useful too. Thanks, I'm heading out into our 3'+ degree day but will check later tonight.......

Ok, done. Also, when I open the DNG in CS4 the preview shown is the same as the Develop (fit) view, i.e. more saturated.

3' degrees in NZ? I was just back there over Christmas and it was much cooler - that was Auckland though.
