I'm very new to Lightroom and need help to finish a project I'm working on.

I added a title and a caption to each photograph in my library by clicking on the image and adding it under the Metadata heading in the title and caption fields. I exported the gallery for the web and realized I misspelled something. When I went back to lightroom and clicked on Library all of the metadata for each image read <mixed>. I retyped the caption (without the typo) and now all of my images have that same caption.

How do I edit a caption or title after they all read <mixed>????

You must have selected all the images in the folder(s) you were viewing. <mixed> indicates that you have selected more than one image and the metadata is different in one or more of the selected images.

The metadata you enter in the fields in the metadata panel is applied to all the images that are selected in the grid view (on the primary display).

Jim is correct, in that <mixed> only appears when multiple images, with non-identical metadata are selected in Grid View.

There is a further, small complication, in even that situation, the result depends on the setting of Library menu > Metadata > Show Metadata for Target Photo Only. If this is checked/enabled, only the metadata for the 'Most Selected' image is shown, even in 'mixed' circumstances.
