When exporting a portrait to be used as an attachment in email.....I discovered that the the two methods of sizing the image (using inches versus total pixels for the long edge) yielded files that were different in appearance. For example, when I created an export file using 432 pixels (6 inches x 72 pixels) for the long edge (vertical side) dimension the model was larger in the image than when I sized the same image using 6 inches for the long edge with a resolution of 72 pixels.

It seems to me that either method should deliver the exact same results. But the former method ruined the proportionality of the model vis a vis empty space that I cropped into the image.

72 pixels is the default value for resolution when no dimension is specified. It is ignored in exporting unless you are resizing to a print dimension in inches. Then the resolution is used to calculate the pixels for the resize. There are no inches in the image data only pixels. When you print you will specify a print dimension. Good resolution for printing would be ~300ppi. So an 8X10 print at 300 psi would be 2400 px X 3000px If the dimension of your image has a different aspect ratio, you will need to crop before printing that 8X10.

If you are going to send an image as an attachment, you can ignore the resolution field and the resize field, Sending all of the pixels from the original. If this results in an image larger than the mail client can accept, then you want to resize to translate the original pixels (long edge) to a smaller image If your original image has a long edge of 6000px you might want to resize that to 1920 (HD-TV) or 1024 (VGA).

It seems to me that either method should deliver the exact same results.
I would agree, it should and in fact does when I try it. So I'd think there may be a small mis-step somewhere. What are the exact dimensions of the two exports? They should be 288 x 432, assuming you are using a 3 x 2 aspect ratio.

I used those dimensions precisely many times and continue to get files much larger than 288 x 432 with the content cropped. (However, my other complaint that I got different size images when I used pixel dimensions versus "inches dimensions" is no longer a problem)

For several years I have belonged to the Photographic Society of America and a member club and I have submitted over 100 photos with the "pixel dimensions" those clubs require. I have never had a problem of wrong pixel dimensions or "cropped content".

I am attaching two files; the first is a screen shot, sc00143.jpg,
SC00143.jpg
4x6 in-.jpg
of the LR export screen that shows at the bottom that used 288 x 432. But the actual dimensions of the created photo are 1081 x 1350. In addition the top lost about .5 inches and the bottom more than .25 inches. This image was created from a larger jpg image created in Photoshop. My Canon camera uses 2x3 format. I have had the same problem using a tif file to created the jpg file.

I was in another thread where someone was not getting the expected size after export. That person re-installed LR and it corrected it.

I notice you seem to have an active plugin with 'Force Crop for Instagram' checked. I don't know that plugin, but maybe this plugin is causing what you see.

When you reset the Preferences do you have to go through them to get them back to the way you had them set?
Of course.

I suspected so but I've never done it so I wasn't sure. When you re-install LR you don't have to reset anything as far as I can remember. I have only done that once. Nothing wrong with resetting presets but it just seems easier to re-install. If re-setting I'd probably take screen shots to remember all my settings.

Just in case I know I could have looked up the details for re-setting presets. I came across in a blog here but never read all the details because I wasn't planning on doing it. I was mostly curious about advantages/disadvantages doing it both ways.

Presets (export, develop, metadata, etc. ) are not in the Preference file. Resetting the Preference doesn't make you loose your presets

Sorry I meant preferences. So all the preferences have to be reset. Would this include your Develop Default settings?
