Image corruption?

I have noticed a couple of my images (out of a 8',''' catalog) appear to be corrupted in some manner. The two images have black, overlaid with magenta and green bars over three-quarters of the image--the rest of the image is fine. I tried deleting from the catalog and reimporting. In the import window the image appears fine, on import the thumbnail looks good for a few seconds, then the corrupted one appears. The image is fully viewable in BreezeBrowser and Bridge, but if I open it in CS3 or ACR it also shows as corrupted. Is this something that may have happened on original import off the card?

Michelle, more than likely, that's what happened. (I presume we're talking raw, here?)

I don't know what technology BB or Bridge are using, but they may be showing the embedded JPG preview, rather than doing a full raw render. That's what you're seeing in Lr's import dialog, and the first post import display prior to full-rendering.

Where the corruption took place is hard to say. There have been a handful of folks who quite adamantly maintain that Lr corrupted their images. The development team has looked at this quite vigorously, and firmly believe that Lr is simply such a 'nit-picking' render pipeline, that it finds corruption that may slide thru other converters. If you think about it, Lr's one guiding tenet, non-destructive editing, precludes Lr corrupting a raw image, since it (almost) never ever writes to it. All other operations (copy, rename, move, etc.) are handed off to the standard OS tools.

I assume the original card based files are long gone? Not much you can do at this point, but extract the JPG preview.

You could also try opening them with ViewNX (free download from Nikon) and if that works you could save them as full size tiffs for import into LR. You could even adjust them slightly and try re-saving as NEF's, it may fix the problem.

Yes, the images on the card are long gone--fortunately wasn't my only image of the subject. I've only noticed it on a couple, so likely happened on import,
