I have your book download about moving bLightroom to a new computer and have two questions.

The only programme on my 11 year old iMac, apart from the usual pre installed programmes, are Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. All my photographs are on an external ssd drive permanently connected to the iMac.

Why is Migration Assistant not recommended, is my first question. The second is this. After moving Lightroom as described in your book, how do I move all my saved web sites and searches and other non Lightroom information.

Migration assistant is designed exclusively for MacOS. The Book from LightroomQueen is generic and applies only to Lightroom but on either OS.

For Mac Users upgrading to a new Mac, the Migration Assistant will move everything for your old Mac to the new one and would be preferred if you need to move more than Lightroom.

If it is not too late, I would recommend that you start over with Migration Assistant.

Exactly as Clee says... we're currently working on an update to that ebook and will include the option to use Migration Assistant.

Thank you Cletus, for taking the time to answer my question. When I have my Mac Mini, I will take yours and Victorias advice and use migration assistant.

Sorry, I forgot to ask if there are any precautions I should take using migration assistant, particularly regarding the link between my ircat file and the images on my ssd drive.

MacOS does not use drive letters which can change in Windows from machine to machine. The SSD is a volume either mounted internally or as an EHD. As long as the name of the volume does not change, your LrC catalog file will retain the same path even if you move to a different Mac.

IOW. The LrC catalog maintains an absolutePath and a relativePath field to the imported images On a Mac, these are consistent whereas on Windows, the absolutePath contains a drive letter (which can change arbitrarily) and the relativePath is unresolvable unless the catalog and images are on the same volume.
