I had to restore from a backup awhile back and while I seem to have everything, I'd like to be able to look at a folder of images and identify whether or not they have Smart Previews or indeed, if they have any previews at all. I seem to remember that in the past there was an indicator visible on the photo border that indicated the Preview Status, but even after specifically creating Smart Previews for a whole folder of images, I see nothing that identifies that has been done, other than the line beneath the Histogram saying so on individual images. What I need at present is to know the status for whole folders. Is there a way to accomplish that?

For Smart Preview status, select the folder, then Ctrl+A to select all the images in that folder, then look at the line below the Histogram....it gives you the status of all selected images (total number of images without a Smart Preview which are not missing, total number of images that are not missing but also have a Smart Preview, total number of images that are missing but also have a Smart Preview, total number of missing images that have no Smart Preview).

There's no way, AFAIK, of identifying the library preview status of an image.

You can also select the folder and then filter on smart previews. This will tell you how many images do have a smart preview, so you can do the math how many don’t.

Thanks for getting back to me guys. Since asking that I found a way that works for me. I added a column to one of my Custom Metadata Filters, and in the Develop section of the the filter, checked the "Smart Preview Status" and saved that Custom Metadata Filter again and now that works great. Cheers.

Now I have another question. I can apply my saved Metadata filter to a folder, but as soon as select a different folder, the filter reverts to default and the saved Metadata filter has to be invoked again. Is there any way to make it stick?

There is a little lock button on the top right hand corner of the filter grid. Tiny. I leave this locked all the time , as I use a collection of metadata fields which work for me 99% of the time.
