first of all hi everyone.
can anyone tell me when i export jpeg files back into ps2 are they reduced in size
 
r2'd, Welcome to LR Forums.

Tell us more; how are you exporting to PS2? What exactly do you mean by 'reduced in size'? Smaller file size(MB), smaller pixel count, smaller dpi/ppi, something else?
 
when i import a file from ps 2 into lightroom , once i have finished with it i then export the jpeg back to ps 2 when i open it in ps 2 it has reduced in size example ps file b4 i import to LR
width 35'4
height 2336

width inchs 48.67
height inchs 32.44

on exporting back into ps 2 the sizes are
width 35'4
height 2336 but the inchs sizes are
width 14.6
height 9.73
i hope this makes sense

The files are the same size as they have the same pixeld imensions, the only thing that has changed is th pixels per inch amount.
This doesn't really affect anything with the file so you can relax.

This because you export at 24'ppi!
Look at all the options of the export dialog box as there are many. One of them is where you have put the 24'ppi setting (24' x 14.6 = 35'4).
As the pixel count is the same, you obviously lost nothing.

You can either export with another ppi value or change it in PS thereafter.
 
r2'd, what is important to remember of all this is that there is no such notion of dimensions in Lightroom. Just image sizes. One mistake many do is to interchange the meaning of size which is the pixel count with dimension in ruler units. As long as an image is in the computer or screen, there are no dimensions. It is only when one want to print to paper that the decision to use a given amount of pixels for each unit of length is made. It is just then that the computer can put a ruler with length units on an image. Notice that those rulers rarely match with a real ruler as the pixel count of your monitor may be known to the computer but how tall or wide it is, he doesn't know. Also, as Mark pointed out, if your desired pixel count per measured unit is not known, the program will make a guess...
 
the minimize embedded box in unchecked and i cant find the export dialog box but i understand about the pic resizing back in ps 2 .Im sorry to be a bit thick when it comes to these programmes but i am one of these people that cant absorb books although i have 2 of scott kelbys books but i am self taught in ph2 and LR. I am sorry if i am wasting you time but i do appreciate it

r2'd, truly that's why we're here, we enjoy helping. While LR is fundamentally simple to grasp in concept, there are many nuances. Since the target market is photogs turning to tech, and not geeks turning to photography, many many folks are climbing the same learning curve as you.

the minimize embedded box in unchecked and i cant find the export dialog box...
The export dialog box is the one where you saw that "Minimize embedded metadata" checkbox. It does appear as soon as you click the "Export..." button.

I think it's been covered pretty well, but from your later comments it might still be confusing.

PPI or DPI means absolutely nothing until you decide to print. When you see a "change" in what you are calling size, it is not a change in the image size, it is a change in somebody's decision on how to print the image.

This is very widely misunderstood, even by stock photo agencies who sometimes specify a PPI or DPI when they should really be stating a minimum image size. For example if you know your target print is an 8x1' inch print, then if you want to print at 2'' DPI, your image will have to be 16'' x 2''' pixels in image size. If you want to print at 3'' DPI, your image size would have to be 24''x3''' pixels. So if your image size is 48''x6''' and you tell PS to print at 3'' dpi, it will halve the actual image size as part of the printing process, though it will leave your original file alone.

In other words, DPI is only relevant when talking about printing. As long as your image size remains the same, the image has not been changed in size.

Or perhaps simply that they want to see 3'' show up in the photoshop dpi box and don't realize that it has nothing to do with the 8'' pixels requirment.

Be careful here not to confuse image size and file size.
I see it as this.
File size - always Pixel dimensions
Image size - physical size determined by file size and ppi

As a computer programmer, I have to disagree with your take on it. File size, the number of bytes stored on the computer, has nothing whatsoever to do with image size, other than the fact that the more pixels, the bigger the file.

If I take a 3'' by 3'' pixel image and add a ton of metadata, add another dozen layers or so, I can easily end up with a huge file. I have some business cards where the image size is close to 3''by3'' pixels, but with all the various text and shape layers, the file size is 1.6 MB. The actual image data, if stored at 8 bits per pixel for a 3''x3'' pixel image would be on the order of 72' KB.

A low quality jpg of that same image, where inside the jpg file many of the pixels will have only two or three bits of information might be as low as 3' KB. If the image is pure black, for example, it could be as small as 1KB and still be a 3''x3'' image size. Like zip and other compression techniques, what happens when you export a lower jpg is that adjacent pixels that have the same color and luminence values will get combined so that where the high quality jpg or a TIFF might store 16 bits for two 8 bit pixels, the low quality jpg might store only 1 or 2 bits for those same two pixels.

If we take that same 3''x3'' image and convert it to a photopro colorspace and up the pixel data to 16 bits per pixel, then our basic image data is going to come in around 1.4 MB.

Any of these files, the one with layers, the 8 bit plain picture or the 16 bit picture are only going to make a 1 inch by 1 inch print if the dpi setting is set to 3'' ppi. But if I were to set my ppi to 1' dots per inch, then that same 3''x3'' pixel image will print out as 3' by 3' inches -- a huge print where each pixel will be 1/1'th of an inch square (some printers make rectangles, but lets ignore that for now). It won't look very good at all. Well, some artsy types might like the result.

typical file structure:

header: a few bytes indicating what kind of image file it is
metadata: an area which could be nearly empty or could have a few thousand bytes of data
image data: In the simplist case, an 8 bit image, 1 byte per pixel. In more complex cases, like a PSD file, there will be not only the basic image data, but also layer data, sometimes history data, always a bunch of extra chunks of data that photoshop knows what do with.

Somewhere in the metadata is a code that indicates the ppi last chosen for this image. You could change that one little code without affecting anything else in the image. All it does is tell your print program how you want to scale this when you print it. I think most print programs generally ignore this code and instead present you with visual scaling tools and adjust the actual printing pixels per inch according to the scaling you set in the print choices dialogs. The printing software will then compress or expand the pixels on the fly.
 
Thanks for that Brandon, I knew all of that and as a photographer I see it how I see it which is what I stated.

But I do live downunder which you may see as upside down !! LO
 
Yes Geoff, when I was a kid I lived in Djakarta and I always wondered why everyone was going around upside down, :-)
