I cant use lightroom as the catalogues are eating all my memory.

I have just upgraded to light room 2 and I am in a right muddle with my catalogues can I condense them into one?

I cannot use light room as there is not enough space on my hard drive. First I have tried to create some space by trying to optimize my catalogues but to no avail.

I need to find out how to move the catalogues safely to an external hard drive...can anyone out there help I need a genius?

To move a catalog to another drive, just move it in Windows Explorer, then double-click it to open it. You should probably also move the Previews database that sits alongside it.

Remember that if you're moving your catalog to the same drive that you use for catalog backups, you'll want to move those to yet another drive. Don't put the backups on the same drive as the main catalog!

To condense your catalogs into one, just pick the main one, then use Import from Catalog (in the File menu) to read the others into it.

It might be a good idea for the original poster to say a little more about what's going on. Mac or PC? How much hard drive space does the computer have? How many pictures and of what type are they? Raw or JPEG or what? Part of this could be included in your signature.

The OP's computer details are listed under his name but the file types, available space, etc would be useful.

Hello,

wow I asked for a genius and got three thank you for your quick responses....this place is amazing!

As you can tell this is my first time using a forum so bare with me I will try and present all the facts that you might need to solve this problem.

I am running a mac book pro 1st generation, with OSX 1'.4.1.1...I have looked on my hard drive and I have got a loly 21.3 MB available on my internal hard drive hence the problems....

I will have a go at condensing the catalogues today and let you know how it goes!

Oh boy! Yes, the OS system won't like that, let alone Lightroom. I'd guess you've got a lot of other files there that could do with transferring to your external hard drive too. There's some good tips here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html

Hi victoria...I literally only have my lightroom catalogues on my computer everything else is bare...no music no documents no nuffink just lightroom stuff taking up tons of room...I will check out the link you sent thanks!

In that case, it might be the images themselves that are taking up the space, in which case you could consider leaving the catalog and previews on your internal drive and just moving the images to the external.

i just did this and moved all my RAW files in the external drive.

Here is what i Did.

1. Open LR
2. Add a folder (which is the location in the external drive where i want my RAW files to be, of course the external drive has to be plugged in :D)
3. using lightroom, i just dragged my whole catalogue to the new location.

and there, all my images with their edits are still intact.

Hi all....I dont actually have any images on my lap top I have all my Raw images on an external hard drive and import them into light room from my external...I never copy them on to the laptop. Trying to figure it all out at the mo I will keep you posted.

Got 1:1 Previews set to never delete then? Check in Catalog Settings for that setting.
