How to remove old catalogs

The only way to remove old catalogs I have found is to delete the originals - is there a way inside LR?

That's right. Just get rid of the lrdata file and the catalog is gone. Any image files, however, are still there and can be imported into another catalog or deleted.

You should also delete the companion .lrdata file, which is where Lightroom stores all the previews of the photos imported into that catalog and can therefore be quite large.
