  • The November 2019 Lightroom updates are now available. Lightroom Classic includes the ability to export the same photos as multiple sizes/formats in a single export, content aware fill for panorama edges and more. It does require a catalog format upgrade and there are updated system requirements, so you may want to wait a few days before upgrading.
Lightroom (cloud-based service) has export options (such as TIFF format, renaming and color space), custom sort order on the desktop, copy/paste to multiple photos on iOS and more.
The Missing FAQ and Edit Like a Pro eBooks are already updated for the changes.
  • Stop struggling with Lightroom! There's no need to spend hours hunting for the answers to your Lightroom 6 questions. All the information you need is in Adobe Lightroom 6 - The Missing FAQ!

To help you get started, there's a series of easy tutorials to guide you through a simple workflow. As you grow in confidence, the book switches to a conversational FAQ format, so you can quickly find answers to advanced questions. When you upgrade to subscription, there's also a Lightroom Classic version available.

How to open Lightroom with a backup

Please bear with me because it's hard to ask for specific help when I don't really understand what happened. As best I can figure what happened:

I was trying everything I could think of to recover extra space on my computer, including deleting old Time Machine backups, and I decided to delete old Lightroom backups too. When I next launched LR, I got an error message about the catalog -- I wish I had stopped and written down the message I got and what exactly I responded. As I understood it I was telling LR to go ahead and open the Catalog with an older version of something. The result is that I now have a catalog missing about an entire year of photos.....thousands of them since last August don't appear.

When I look in my Pictures folder (screenshot below), I see a backup from 8/5/17 which I think means I could launch LR with that backup and I will only have to re-import a couple of weeks of photos, is that right?

I sure will appreciate some help in doing this right. Thanks in advance.

Victoria has an informative page about restoring from a backup in the link below- Read fully.
Although "Corruption" is not your exact situation, the information is still relevant for restoring your catalog.

Disaster strikes - a corrupted catalog! | The Lightroom Queen

But looking at your screen clip, this is what I see-
1. Your currently open catalog is the Lightroom Catalog.lrcat that is dated "Today, 6:26PM" (66.6MB) but it is much smaller than the Backup version.
2. I believe your Backup "Lightroom Catalog 2.lrcat" (295.4MB) in the folder "2017-8-5 2139" is the backup you want to restore.
3. It appears you may have tried the Unzip process twice as you have a 'Catalog 2' and a 'Catalog 2 2' within the Backup folder. (They would be identical except for the name)

Thank you so very much. I knew I shouldn't panic because I figured it wouldn't be incredibly difficult if I just knew how to do it--and now I do. Thank you thank you! Cheers, Laurel
