How to move images from mac drive to external hard drive?

I have been away travelling and saved my images through lightroom on my internal mac laptop drive, and now I have returned i want to move the images onto my external drive, where my images usually live.

My question is, can I just move the original files without exporting them through lightroom, without losing any changes and keywords I have set?

Or should I export the entire catalogue in lightroom (6,''' + images) and save them on the external and then re import into lightroom?

I think the simplest appraoch would be to export as a catalog and then Import that catalog into your master cataslog on the 'big' machine.

Reimport is generally the wrong answer... One thing is not clear to me here: Do you work with a laptop and external disk only or with two different computers?
