I have just discovered keyword sets:however Im not sure if it works as I assume it does

When I try to 'edit set' it contains keywords that are not relevant to a set I want to create, but is probably relevant to the images in athe folder Im looking at if I include all of the images in that folder

Is there a way to create a set (edit set) without having ONLY those images you want it to apply to, in the current folder?

EG, [I want to include] 'Place, places , location, locations', [but not include] 'colour, colours, other places, other place' ALL of which comes up when I select 'edit set' - I am concerned that by editing that selection I may alter/delete keywords already assigned to some images

Go ahead and edit any keyword set and then choose Save Current Settings as New Preset. This will present you with a dialog box allowing you to name the new Keyword Set. The set you started with will still be there unchanged.

IS, as far as changing keywords that have already been applied, don't worry. Keyword Sets are intended to modify only the user interface, that is, to make various keywords more accessible to the user. Manipulating the sets doesn't actually interact with applied kewyords in any way.
