How to get more silver in this?

Do you all have any tips for getting a bit more silver/lightness in to this angel? I'm wanting to hilight her more so she stands out as the focal point in this image. This will be printed out in large sizes on Kodak Endura Pro Metallic paper. :cheesy:

Also...

Maybe I missed it, but is there no single area selection tool to work on, say, just the angel in this photo?

Hi John, welcome to the forum!

Have a look at the adjustment brush tool just below the histogram. That will allow you to paint a mask and increase the exposure/brightness/contrast/whatever else you fancy.

I can't believe I missed that tool (right in my face)! It really works perfect, too! I'll save and post the lightned up photo tonight when I get back from dinner!

I noticed a lot of folks didn't want to believe LR2 is better and fought your posts and mine over it. :evil:

The fact remains, I used NX2 and really found LR2 easier and a far better tool. ;) :cheesy: The final jpegs even look better and getting prints up to 24x36 backed that up 1' fold! They look really good! :shock:

Thank you! Now I need to order a test print on that Kodak Endura Pro Metallic to see how it looks! :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

If you've never printed on that paper, I suggest you give it a try! It makes everything from the mids to highlights pop! 8)

To do a comparison, open a separate browser instance (not tab) and view the two windows side by side.

I think the adjustment helped some but is probably still not getting the pop you want. Couple thoughts:

* trying working the Contrast curve to get stronger constrast

* add a post-crop vignette, experiment with how strong. It will bring more focus to the center.

What does the color version look like? With black and white, your subject is having a hard time standing out.

I guess you also have to consider what your composition is about... if it is about the statue itself, the buildings are much too strong of a presence and you might want to crop out some of the square corners of the buildings and go with a portrait crop. If it is the whole scene, then you are probably pretty close.

Thanks for the tips!

The pictures main focus is the angle. I backed all the way up against a sign leveled and centered my camera to the angel at 1'mm wide, and then cranked up the tripod to get the camera about 7 or more feet in the air. I had to use the remote shutter as well.

I wanted this to be a wide angle to capture the whole scene. The way I see it is the ground pulls your eye to the main focus, the angel, but you also have the beauty of the entire scene.

To me, just the angel alone leaves a lot to be desired. It's just a statue with no place. It has more to say to me with the whole scene.

As for contrast, I was afraid I was using too much. I think I had it cranked up in the 5'ish zone in LR2. When I cranked it up more, it made the right side brick on the building and the patio squares look sort of dirty.

Now don't take this as me being offended or resisting your advice because I'm not. I really appreciate the honest feedback and tips! :cheesy:

I'll try to find a better way to add contrast in hopes of not getting that dirty concrete look all over the image. I'd also like to brighten up the angle more and add some more black to it to get the silver look with black shadows. If you have an easy way (tip) to do that, let me know. ;)

OK, I got the 8x12 Metallic print today (finally - USPS is slow). I liked everything except how gray the angel turned out. Don't get me wrong, I'm still very pleased with how well it turned out, but it would be perfection if I can get that angel totally silver with black.

I'm working real hard on it right now and will post a sample shortly. :)

OK, this didn't save exactly as it looked in LR for some reason after downsizing and converting to jpeg, but how is this one?

Oh, and is the angel silver on your calibrated screens? On my Sony xbright it is, but on the Sony trinitron it's still a bit gray.
