I just purchased an external Hard disk and am ready to backup my photos in my LR library. What would be the best way, do I select a folder, that is for example "2''7" and then click "Export" and export this to my ext.HD?

How to export images to an external Hard disk?

Export in this sense means "Save As". If you want to move files from your local HD to the External HD, find the folders ion the Left panel and drag them to the new location in the left panel. Lightroom will do all the househeeping and you won't lose refereential integrity in the database.

Thanks! What I actually was going to do, is backing up my photos in LR (on my hard drive)to an external hard drive so I have copies. I have no backups at all :
...(I know) but today is not too late! So these thousands of photos right now need to be copied. I created a special folder on my ext.hd "Lightroom Pictures. In this folder I would like to keep copies of my photos. So it is not "moving" or "exporting" or is it?

You do not need to use Lightroom for this. Take a look a some of the Backup software available for your Mac. Find one that will let you schedule a periodic backup. This program can run the first time and make a copy of everything in your Lightroom Pictures folder and then on a regular basis it will backup just those files that have been added or changed since the last backup.

Well in this case, can I just "copy" my photo (lightroom pictures) folders on my Harddrive to my External Harddrive? I don't need software for that and indeed, Lightroom doesnt have anything to do with it.
Actually, i read about two options when i did this:
1. there is an option in LR to export as catalog file>export as catalog
OR
2. in the library mode in LR there is a folders menu on the left, click the plus sign then add folder. I did this when i have my external drive plugged in. when i click the add folder i just point it to the direction of where i want my photos to be. after i created this folder, i drag the folder in my internal HD where all my photos are to the new destination.
I did option 2. just because i found out about option 1 later

Yes you can just "copy" them over to the new drive. Keep the back ups of your catalog there as well and you will be reasonably safe!!

Yes you can just "copy" them over to the new drive. Keep the back ups of your catalog there as well and you will be reasonably safe!!
