Help! I am still figuring out Lightroom...

When I first got my new camera I unintentionally shot RAW+jpegs- 2 files for every picture. I then uploaded these into Lr.

Now, I would like to delete the jpegs (I don't need duplicates...who has the space?). In grid mode I can only see one thumbnail. I dont want to delete the files themselves on the drive without telling LR otherwise it will look for them as they are loaded in the catalogue right!?! I try not to do things behind Lr's back so as not to make it angry...how do I tell it what I want to do! Translator/Mediation required!

Urg...so complicated! Thanks in advanced! :)

Are you sure that LR has imported them both ?

Under normal condition LR imports only the RAW data and ignores the JPG files.
If so you can delete the JPG from disk without disturbing LR as LR only works with the RAW files.

As you wrote "In grid mode I can only see one thumbnail" I assume LR imported only the RAW files.

fware, I mayt be mistaken, but I think that Lr won't ignore parallel companion raw+JPG files. Depending on the Prefs setting of 'Treat JPGs as separate files' it will:

a) Import the raws and JPGs as separate files, or
b) Import the raws, with a filetype of raw+JPG, and treat the JPG as a 'sidecar' file.

In a) the two files are separately handled and editable. In b) only the raw 'exists' for photographic purposes within Lr, the JPG goes along for the ride on file operations like copies, moves, renames and deletes.

I can't say that I like the b) mode, it's always confused me just a bit, and I've never found a way to break the linkage once it's occured. To fix it, I've always had to remove the files from the catalog, delete(or otherwise hide) the JPGs on disk, and reimport.

I believe there's another recent thread running on the same topic. Edit, just found it: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/showthread.php?t=6917

That said, I'm very willing to be further educated on the topic. :)

Okay, so I def have both in my catalogue. On the top right hand corner in grid mode it says 'CR2+JPEG' so I think Brad you are right my friend, it doesn't ignore them...its too clever for its own good!

Yes, I see! Preferences/Import/Treat Jpegs separate. And I'm with you, option B is a bit confusing.

If the world was perfect: I would like to delete the JPEGS but not have to import them all over again. I would like to delete the jpegs with Lr's blessing, in Lr. Can't have it all I guess!

If you filter to bring up those files that are paired CR2 & JPG, you can also filter that to show only JPEGs and then delete the JPEG set
You can also look at this as another excuse to buy more harddrives :)
