Secondary EEs in LR have a "choose" button. No problem. But yesterday I installed CS4, and it hijacked the "primary" EE slot over CS3. I'm not ready for that yet -- CS3 has vital plugins (for me) that don't yet work in 4. So how do I re-select CS3 as my primary EE and demote CS4 to one of many secondary EE options?

LR selects the most up to date version of PS as #1. You will need to set up CS3 as an additional one.
I'm sure there is a hack possible or done but I have no knowledge of it.
Not what you wanted to hear I'm sure.

Geoff, I have notes from Victoria on a hack she posted on another forum. I think I'll let her follow up, as I don't want to mess it up, (it's definitely intended for power users). In the meantime I'm going to test it.

So, Kent, patience, we may have something for you.

Actually, I've just played with this and can't get it to work in WinXP. VB's instructions seem to indicate that it will work with Mac/XP/Vista, but the syntax looks suspiciously Mac. (Which is what Kent needs) I took my best shot with both the given syntax, and a reasonable translation to Windows.

Let's wait for Victoria to chime in.

Copy the plugins into the equivalent CS4 folders - they usually work.

The other thing is that if CS3 is already open, the commands to edit in Photoshop will not start CS4.

John can you clarify please, what plug ins go where? Thanks.

Well, for example, I use Imagenomic Noiseware. In CS3 it was in D:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\Imagenomic as a file called Noiseware.8bf.

All I need to do to get it working in CS4 is create the folder D:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-Ins\Imagenomic\ and place Noiseware.8bf in it.

It works most of the time.

This is awesome -- I care about this issue primarily because of Noiseware, so if you have found that it works as a plug-in in CS4, I'm most of the way home.

Thanks to everyone who has put time into responding to my query -- much appreciated. You guys are awesome.

Update: I just copied the Noiseware plug-in to CS4 and replicated my very convenient Cmd-E out of LR into CS4, banged the image into the Noiseware filter and all seemed to work well. But . . .

New issue: I had just gotten really happy about shooting sports at night at high ISO because I had Noiseware in PS and could save back out to LR in JPEG (not an issue since noise reduction is my last step and I'm never touching these images again) -- I have no use for hundreds of PSDs or TIFFs per game at 4' MB a pop. But CS4 didn't offer me JPEG as a "Save As" option -- what's up with that?

File must be in 8 bit mode in order to save as jpg (at least its this way in CS3).?

The transfer to CS4 is a 16 bit file, JPG is 8 bit, you'll have to down convert in PS to enable an 8-bit JPG save. (PS > Image > Mode > 8bits per channel)

Edit: Once again, I missed when the thread rolled over to the next page, and posted a basically duplicate response, sorry.

Good, that's a handy coincidence! If you have the Noiseware standalone, one thing I would do is add it as another external editor, so you can just right click and choose Edit in Noiseware. Imagenomic also recently released a load of droplets with particular effects - add those as extra editors so you can batch process your files.

As for your extra issue, it's probably that you're in 16 bit mode. In any case, I think that the Save for Web option is now much improved - letting you choose what metadata to save with the file.

The other option, to save copying all of the plugins, it to look in PS preferences and set your CS3 plugins folder as the 'additional plugins' folder.

The workaround I posted on that other forum - I have to say I haven't tried it on Windows, and it's very definitely a hack, so I'd hesitate to post it on an open forum. The basic theory should still work, but I have no way of testing it on a Windows machine with CS3/CS4 at the moment.

Does the plugins workaround work well enough for you Kent?

Victoria,

Would you mind posting a link to that Mac hack on the other forum you mentioned?

Thank you. I'd like to set up Photoshop Elements 6 as m primary external editor.

I'll PM you camner

Because your files are in 16-bit. JPG only llows 8-bit. Change it in your Export preferences, or change it via Edit>Mode>8-bit in PSCS4 before you save out the JPG.
