I have an IMac. I just moved my data files from an external Hard drive that was formatted Mac Journaled. After the transfer I realized that my new 4 TB Crucial X6 SSD drive came formatted ExFAT. Is it necessary or advisable to reformat the drive and do the file transfer over. The whole purpose of getting the new drive was to improve performance and hope that the data would be safer and the drive would last longer.

I use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - it's native to Mac so the most efficient (assuming you don't want to share the drive with a Windows machine)

I format all of my drives as APFS. It’s Apple’s newest filesystem and I figure that they probably made some improvements since HFS+

Good call. Cletus - my SSD was formatted before that was available, I concur with your choice!

I am Using Mojave because I still have som Aperture file to go through. Will APFS work for me?

This brings up the question can I access my Aperture files with Avalanche is I upgrade to a newer OS?

I don’t remember when APFS was introduced. It may have been Catalina. The disk Utility will tell you is APFS is an option.

As for Avalanche, you will have to ask the Avalanche people.

APFS was introduced with High Sierra (10.13), so you can (and probably should) use it.
