How many images can LR hold?

I just imported all of my images to LR 2.4 and I noticed that when I went from about 4'',''' images to roughly 75',''' images everything slowed down. I just bought a brand new Imac with maxed out memory and video card and was hoping to avoid this problem. Is there a limit to how many images LR will manage? I still have another 3'',''' images on another hard drive that I need to manage, which will add up to over one million images in LR.

Adobe have tested this but haven't considered it necessary to publish a limit or recommendation. As a first step, try optimising the catalogue.

I suppose it is a function of the power of your computer. The bigger your catalogue the faster the processor and more memory you will need.

Correct, though also add in other factors such as hard drive access speed.

I've also found that the initial import is slower, since LR may be building previews, updating metadata, applying develop settings etc. Once all the file intensive operations are out of the way, LR is only accessing it database which needs to be optimised periodically. There are things that can be done to speed up an initial bulk load such as setting the develop setting to none, minimising the size and quality of the JPEG previews etc.

After you have bulk loaded a million images, then presumably new imports will be of camera card quantities and you can assume more normal defaults.
