Please would someone point me towards an article (or other) that explains how LR's backup works. The backup process is so quick and the resultant file size so relatively small that I'd like to know what exactly is being backed up and whether I need to do more than "backup" through LR.

The backup's just a copy of your catalog, renamed with the date. You want to make sure you're backing up your images separately!
