I have successfully exported my catalog to another hardrive as a full backup with images.
How do I update the catalog without exporting the whole thing again.

Well, you can do an Export as Catalog again, and on the other hard drive do an Import from Catalog again, rejecting duplicates, and the end result should be the same as the original catalogue. But Export/Import is really designed for moving work back and forth between computers, not really for backup, and so it doesn't offer an efficient workflow for the latter.

Hey Alan,

Are you wanting to 'update the catalog without exporting the whole thing again' in order to back up your files successfully?

I am new to Lr but it asks me if I want to back up my files on weekly basis. I haven't said yes yet because I am unsure about workflow...getting to that...but you shoudl back up your work that way?

I suppose I should ask then: I have my catalogues on my comp and my files on my hard drive. When Lr asks shows me the 'Back up Catalogue window'...it wants to create new 'back up' catalogues and update them regularly? Not sure where to put those...?

First, it is important to understand that the Lightroom backup procedure won't backup any image! It just backup the Catalog and the best place to put those backups is on a different drive than the one used by the working Catalog.
