How do I stop a new keyword going into a parent keyword group?

Operating System: Mac OS10.10 (5)

Lightroom Version: LRCC - CC 2015.12 [ 1125239 ]
(Please go to Help menu > System Info to double check the exact version number)

Question or Description of Problem:

Whenever I assign new keyword to an image - it always gets listed under the parent keyword of Birds.

The Birds keyword is highlighted but I cant seem to unhighlight it. Also the Parent Keyword of Birds has a small dot (asterisk?) on it which the other keywords don't have.

Is there a good tutorial which explains very clearly differences between keywording nests and sets and how to add a new keyword without it going under the wrong nest!! It is very frustrating!

I'm not sure why you can't unhighlight the parent keyword. That obviously shouldn't happen and new keywords should appear at the root of your list. You can drag and drop keywords in the keyword list, so it's a nuisance, not a major problem.

If you see an asterisk behind a keyword, it means that you have multiple images selected and some of them have that keyword assigned to them and others don't.

The dot after the keyword means all new keywords will be placed there. Right click on Birds and uncheck 'Put new keywords inside this keyword'.

Right! I totally forgot about that option, and I thought he was talking about an asterisk behind the keyword in the Keywords field. If you see an asterisk behind the keyword in the Keywords field, then that's what I said about multiple images and not all being assigned this keyword. So just in case:

I did know about the asterisks in the keyword field.
Look forward to booting up tomorrow and finding out if it works!!
