According to Victoria's Lr 6 book I can move photos from one folder to another (from p 127):
******************************************************
How do I move folders into other folders or drives?
Moving folders into other folders is simply a drag-and-drop
operation, just like Explorer (Windows) /
******************************************************
But when I do this it leaves the metadata (e.g., keywords) behind.

File metadata is always stored in the catalog. As long as the catalog can find the photo, meaning you haven't changed the name outside of Lightroom, then Lightroom can always find that file.

For some file types, e.g. JPG and DNG, metadata can also be embedded in the photo file itself. For other file types, such as RAW (except DNG) keywords are never stored in the actual file. If you must store the metadata in a file, Lightroom creates an XMP "sidecar" file, but that is entirely optional.

The key is moving it within Lightroom, not outside (as indicated by Phil).

Paul, thanks for pointing out the ambiguity in my earlier message. I should have said , "... haven't renamed or moved outside of Lightroom ..."

Thanks Phil and Paul. I've spent several minutes and a few tries trying to recreate what I was convinced was a problem. You guys are correct.

I generally assure that I have a real problem before requesting help. I didn't work hard enough on this one....
