How do I apply a preset across multi images? and another qn too!

Hey All

I am not anywhere near the 'knowledgeable user' of LightRoom that I really want to be, and am not even sure I use it to the best of its abilities - in fact I am certain I don't; so please excuse these questions if they are rather dull ones!!

First qn: I seem to have changed some default settings in Lightroom such that when I load in a set of images, they all have the same settings applied to them. These settings are ones I used for a series of photos, but I don't want these settings applied as default, I want the system to be somehow reset to what Lightroom did to the RAW files when I first had it and first imported images. Right now, when I load any images, I get a rather 'extreme' set of parameters applied to all images - as I said, which I did use for one set several weeks ago. I don't want these parameters applied to any more images. So, how do I reset LR to what it was - out-of-the-box as it were please?

Second qn: I regularly take a series of shots, say portraits, under studio conditions, and find that when I view them on the PC I like to change the very same setting for each shot. This can often become quite laborious and what I then do is once I have the shot looking as I want it to, with the settings I like to have applied to this particular set, I save a new Preset. Then go through each image and click the 'preset' name I just created thus applying those same settings to each image consecutively.

Is there a method I can use to batch this process so that I can multi select several images, then apply this same preset to those images?

I have only been doing photography for a few months and I guess as I become more experienced at using Lightroom I will find easier and more suitable techniques to accomplish what I am after, and might even get it right 'in camera' more often so that I don't have to make so many adjustments in post processing.

So, hope these are not stupid questions... look forward to some advice from y'all.

John, thanks for your questions and welcome!!
1. In the import dialog box select "none" (which is a default correction) in the develop settings. Picture 2 attached shows this.
2. Once you have your preset saved you can select the images you want to apply the preset to on Library/Grid mode and then apply the preset in Quick Develop (top right) by selecting the preset from the drop down menu "saved preset". This is in picture 3 attached.

Thanks for the answers Geoff, much appreciated.

However, when I do an import, the setting for Develop Settings is set to 'None' and yet there are still quite aggressive parameter changes applied to each image imported. I am thinking I may have reset the 'default' 'none' settings - if you see what I mean, so that the 'None' (and thus the default) is actually a set of parameter changes I have set in a previous session and overwritten the default set??

Actually that is possible, though unlikely. If you have you can go to Preferences
and in the Preset Tab do 'Reset All default Develop settings'. While you are there besure to un-check 'Apply auto tone adjustments' which may be the other culprit.

Rather than create a preset, you can sync the settings from the Develop photo you are working on to all the others that are selected in the filmstrip using the Sync... button at the bottom right of the screen. Clicking the button brings up a dialog of settings that will be copied to the other selected photos when you click Synchronize.

A point that confuses quite a few newcomers......
Elaborating a little on what Mick said, if the above phrase is a little confusing.

Realize that in the LR filmstrip there are *two* levels of selection. Selected photos are highlighted with a light grey bezel. But in any group selection, there is a single photo which is termed "most selected" , it will be highlighted with a much lighter grey. That's the photo that will be affected as you develop. Think of it as a temporary template/target or master/slave relationship, solely for the purpose of copying settings.

Then as Mick suggested, by pressing 'Sync' (lower right) the changes on the "most selected" will be applied to the remaining photos in the selection. A dialog box will pop up which will allow you to select specifically which changes to apply.

You can turn on 'auto-sync' which will do just what it sounds like. I personally don't use that, because I'm a klutz, and I end up unintentionally changing the wrong photos.
