Hi,

When I import a RAW file and make adjustments to it in Lighroom, the adjustments stay there OK. But if I delete the file from the Catalog and then reimport the same RAW file, all the adjustments are gone.

Isn't there supposed to be a Adobe Sidecar file attached to the RAW file somehow that follows that file?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ted

It did follow the file-straight to the trash, so to speak. The changes will not stay with the file until you export it. Then it becomes part of that file.

Ted, you have to prompt LR to do this. It can be done in two ways.

a. In the Library module select the photos for which you wish to save the info and in the menu> Metadata> save the metadata to files (Ctrl+s).
This is the preferred choice.

b. You can have this setup in your LR Preferences. Go to edit>preferences>go to catalog settiongs>metadata tab> select "Autowrite changes to .xmp". (Note this does have some negative effect on the speed performance of LR depending on your system and size of your catalogs).

Also note the message in the dialog box "Warning: Changes made in Lightroom will not automatically be visible in other applications"

Ted, welcome to the forum and please fill in your signature with some info so we can better answer your questions.
A couple of questions:
Do you have autowrite to xmp checked in the catalog settings (metadata)?
If not did you save with cmd/ctrl - s at any point before deleting the file?

Denis, I use autowrite, (so as not to forget!!) and with 1.3.1 don't see a significant loss in performance on my G5 with only 1.5gb ram and catalogs around 1'k images. Certainly this issue has been improved over releases.

Great... Thanks Dennis... (and the rest of you). Now it works perfectly.

That's cool and please fill in your signature!!;);)

Now I have a question. If you do either a cntrl-s or autowrite do you then have your original raw and an edited version, or do you then just have the edited version and no longer have the original? And, I would think, the only way for any other program to see the edited version would be to export it to somewhere. Is that correct?
edit: I just noticed the reply from Denis about the warning in the dialog box. So never mind the last part of my question. Sorry.

Hello again,
Thanks for updating your signature, you may wish to add your name too please.
When you save the changes to xmp via either ctrl-s or auto the changes are written to an xmp sidecar file for RAW files or into the header of a DNG, PSD, TIFF or jpeg. No copy of the file is made, the information is a text file of commands etc. This information is compatible with PS and some other programmes. If you wish to make the changes visible in other programmes an export is necessary where a new copy with the changes is then made.
Hope that answers your query.

I thought any time you made changes to a raw file they were added to the sidecar file anyway, and you didn't have to do cntrl-s. What does cntrl-s do that isn't done anyway?

Changes are made only in the LR database until you ctrl-s unless you have autowrite set. Then the changes are written back to the file.

While we're on the subject of cross compatability, I've been taking my first tentative steps with DNGs, since there're so many happy DNG users here.

It doesn't seem to me that DNG embedded XMP or IPTC data is well understood outside Adobe land. Is this the case? I'm not finding much up-to-date reference material on the net.

For example, XnView (freeware Win viewer) will show my Canon raw files undeveloped, and the DNG files as developed, but it doesn't otherwise seem to be aware of XMP or IPTC. (Note 1)

XnView will happily show the XMP and IPTC data in JPGs or TIFs exported from LR.

I get roubhly the same result from other GUI metadata tools.
Is that roughly the current state of affairs?

I had hoped to use XnView to make read-only DNGs available on my family/home network for family members, but the lack of access to keywords and metadata is a bit of a sticking point.

Is there somewhere to seek a reliable, recent view of the state of the art?

....brad

(Note 1:
I assume XnView is reading the embedded thumbnail, and not decoding LR develop metadata.)

EDG, that's almost correct. Any changes made to a raw (or other source)file are automatically stored in the catalog database. XMP sidecar files are optional, and you must force a write, either ctrl-s, or enable autowrite, in order to create, and then update them. [ Some folks rely on the database, some prefer the security of the separate sidecars, it's one of those personal taste issues.]

There used to be an option to even enable/disable the sidecars, but I can't find it now, I'm assuming it dropped out in a version update, and I missed it.

I see Geoff answered as well, while I was typing/testing.

OK,thanks Brad and Geoff. Now I think I get it, although...it seems a little redundant to have both the database and the sidecar files doing basically the same thing. And neither one can be read by an outside program unless you export.

Having both inside and outside of LR allows for image files to be in multiple catalogs and be accessed by multiple users.
It means catalogs and image files can be independent or interdependent.
The file can certainly be read by Photoshop and I would guess that it is best to experiment to see what can be seen by different applications.
