Hide photos in collections?

Ok, I just got back from a concert gig, and I took photos of about 1' different bands. I was hopping around a bit, so they're not just in neat chronological sequence.

The obvious way of sorting it out is to create a collection for each band. That's easy enough, and so far, so good. However, what's not so easy is telling which ones I've already assigned to a collection.

What I'd like to do is have the photo be hidden once I place them in a collection. That way the only photos I see are the ones I haven't yet sorted out...

It would be kind of like how you can view only unflagged images, or picks and unflagged etc.

Is there an easy way to do this? Yes, I could do a kludge like flagging them as I put them in a collection, but I'd like it to be simple, easy and essentially automatic so that as soon as they went in the collection they'd be hidden.

What about using the Find filter? If your collection is called "concert gig", use 'Text: anywhere' and 'Ruler: Doesn't contain' and type concert gig in the searchfield.. Does that answer your question?

Slighty offtopic, but why can we search specifically for keywords but not in collections? :?

That would work, but it's another kludge, just like rating them a 3 as I put them in the collection or assigning a color to them etc. Since I'm going to have about 1' collections (one for each group) it would get ugly after a bit.

There are several ways to "trick" LR into doing it, I was hoping I had overlooked a simple way that didn't involve a work-around...

Well, here's the kludge I ended up using. I don't rate the photos before I sort them out, since if I only have 1' photos from the band I may choose to post a photo that I wouldn't choose if I had 4' to select from.

So... Since none of the photos in this workgroup have been rated yet. I selected all of them, and rated them a 5. Quick and easy to do, just select all and press 5.

Then, as I sort them into collections, once I rate them a '. Using a filter of > 1, those photos will no longer show up as soon as they're de-rated.

This may not work for everyone, it depends on your workflow. If any of the images you're working on have already been rated, my method won't work, so it has limited usefulness.

To avoid that issue, I'd still like to see LR add a sort criteria of "Images not in a collection" so that I can easily go through and sort ALL images into a collection.
