If I filter photos by any criteria using a Library Filter at the top of the grid view, and then hide the filter by pressing "\" on a keyboard, the filter switches off. Is there a way to hide the entire filter section (which takes a significant part of my small laptop screen) while keeping the filter on?

You could turn the filter into a Smart Collection. The the grid would be the result of the smart collection.

FWIW, I use a smart collection more often than I use the filterbar.

Use the lock icon to lock the filter. The filter will then stay active if you hide the filter bar. Be aware of that, because when you switch sources you might find you have a blank screen if none of the images in the new source match the (hidden but still active) filter.

Hmm, normally the current filter stays enabled regardless of the setting of View > Show Filter Bar (\) or File > Library Filters > Lock Filters (lock icon).

Try restarting your computer. If the problem persists, try resetting LR's preferences:

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

I use Smart Collections heavily for something that I want to keep, or when trying to make an advanced filtration, but I use Filters when I want to filter something quickly, for example keyword + focal length, no need for smart collection in that case as I'm going to delete it after a minute.

@Jim Wilde the lock icon did the thing. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Hmm, glad you got it working. But something must be screwy with your LR, because as I observed above, the current filter stays enabled regardless of the setting of View > Show Filter Bar (\) or File > Library Filters > Lock Filters (lock icon).

Actually, you're right. Now it works for me too. The other day when I asked the question, I tried to make it work, but it would reset the filter whenever I hid the bar. I tried googling, but couldn't find anything. I must have had something else turned on, but now it works as you described. Weird.
