Hi, Newbie needs HELP!!! Please

Hi, I discovered this forum after having given up with the Adobe site and trying to get support there:x So, please forgive me just jumping in with a request for help.

I have been using Lightroom since the first Beta and have not had any problems. Downloaded and used the trial version of Lightroom 2, like it and will probably buy it at a later date. I have just gone back to the original Lightroom and can't access any of my photos that I have taken during the last month. I am just getting messages saying they were downloaded in a newer version of Lightroom (duh! I know!!).

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Abandoning LR2 for the time being? And what steps exactly are you taking, leading up to the 'duh' moment?

PC/Mac, workflow, image filetypes? All these things are important factors for us to consider when framing a reply.

I thought that

if photographs were amended in a version of LR2 then you couldn't open that library in a previous version of LR?

Hi Linda and Welcome!

Let me see if I am reading your post correctly. You used LR1 imported photos, made catalogs, etc. Then you used LR2 BETA imported photos, made catalogs, etc.

Now you have gone back to LR1 and are trying to access the catalogs you made in LR2 BETA? If that is the case then you can't. You'll need to reimport the photos into your LR1 catalog.

If that's not what you are asking you can ignore my ramblings! :p

Many thanks for your replies and it seems I have been a bit vague - sorry about that. Probably a result of my frustration.

I own and used LR1

Downloaded LR2 trial version (not beta) liked it, but not enough to pay out for the upgrade right now, probably later.

As LR2 trial has now expired, I simply opened LR1 again, of course all of my photos from the last 3' days are not there. I tried to import from disc, only to get the messages that I could not import them as they were opened in LR2.

Yes, I have edited a few of them, but not all

Is this enough info? Must admit, I use LR in a pretty basic fashion i.e. import, keywords, and edit. I haven't been cataloguing much (well, not at all actually:oops:).

Again, what type of files are you trying to import from disk? This is important to telling you how to proceed, because it directly affects how LR1 'knows' that LR2 has touched them.

Yes, that's sort of what I expected. The DNGs will have embedded in them information about LR2 and the associated ACR4.5 both of which will be incompatible with LR 1.x.

However, having said that, I did some experimentation.

I imported a CR2 (Canon raw) into LR2. I converted to DNG on import. I disabled autowrite of XMP prior to import. I closed LR2, opened LR 1.4.1 and was able to import the DNG file with no problem.

I then closed LR1.4.1, re-opened LR2. I made a couple of random adjustments to the subject DNG, and forced a metadata save with ctrl-s. Using a file snooper, I could clearly see the metadata differences before and after the save. Closed LR2, reopened LR1.4.1, and 'removed' the subject DNG from the catalog. Again, I was able to import the subject DNG with no problem.

So, the upshot of all this, is that I'm not encountering the issue you're having. I did fully expect to, so I'm not sure what's happening.

Can you tell us the exact error message, and what steps you've taken when it occurs?

Not to worry, if you have the DNGs, you'll be able to salvage your images, but we'd like to make this as painless as possible.

No, I just twiddled a few sliders, just to make a change, and wrote the metadata.

I really haven't tried going backwards in version before, and took it on faith from eljay's post that something in the DNG file was causing a backwards compatability problem, but I don't see what it could be, yet.

Hmmm, I'll give Local Adjustments a try, when I get a second to play.
(Answering questions is easy, verifying that the answers are correct, takes a lot of time sometimes.)

Good idea, something to check anyway.

Hi again

OK, problem solved!! It was very simple really.................I just purchased LR2:cheesy:

I have learnt a lesson here, backup, backup, backup. I have Time Machine, so most daily files are back up frequently. However, I don't always make a back-up onto a disc, which I know I should do so for my photos. Had I done that, I wouldn't have had this problem.

Didn't really want to part with the cash just yet, but on balance, I do like LR2, have got used to the extra gizmos and LR1 felt basic after LR2.

So now I need to learn a bit more about cataloging and get myself better organised.

Sorry about the delay in getting back here, I am in the UK so had to give up last night at midnight and made the decision to purchase around mid-morning today.

Thanks for all your help and as I said before, at least I have discovered this site - very useful
