I'm not even sure I can explain what happened. I had my external not showing up with my pictures where they are stored. Turns out the port is corrupted I guess. Plugged it into another port and I can see my folder (same E). But when I call up my Lightroom it doesn't show anything but telling me to import. Then if I import i will show my folders and pictures but on the right there are no keywords at all. I have no clue how to fix this problem.

But when I call up my Lightroom it doesn't show anything but telling me to import.
That sounds like Lightroom Classic created a new catalog rather than using your existing catalog. Was your catalog on that external drive too?

Yes, you can. Find your original catalogue and double-click on it to open it in LRC. Then go to the General tab of Preferences and make sure the "Default Catalog" is set to that catalogue. After that, you should be fine.

Well after doing that it said it encountered problems and wanted to repair...come to find out further that it's my disk that is damaged. My pictures and my catalogs were on that disk. So I have to go to Backblaze online where I backup and download each file to my other disk. My pictures and catalogs were on the damaged disk. Uggg.

When this is done I don't have to import all again do I? Can I just do as above and double click on the catalog again?

Not to state the obvious, but I strongly recommend replacing the bad disk. Yes, it may be repairable, but unless you know what the issue was, it is not reliable. And if the size of the disc is not larger than 2-4TB, I recommend an SSD if you were using an older spinning platter drive. Samsung makes very good SSDs.

Well it seems the E drive seems to be working on and off...but my catalogs are corrupted. Seems all of them. I try and use one and it says it has to fix. But it doesn't fix. How the heck does one recreate a catalog?

How the heck does one recreate a catalog?
One restores it from a backup. As Ken said, don't restore it onto your failing disk.

They were already on my failing disk...if I Alt and open Lightroom I'm picking one that is damaged. And it won't repair it. And the repair catalog isn't responding. Not sure what to do now.

I have some copied to my F drive and tried one of those...but it says not writable and cannot be opened. Seems I'm dead in the water.

Could you elaborate on this a bit? What is the exact message you are receiving? And have you been able to read this drive on this computer previously?

I'm thinking the problem is that both my catalogs and pictures for LR were all on the disk that crashed. I use Backblaze online and tried downloading a catalog from that E disk that crashed but it takes forever and not even sure that will work. I've tried everything. I tried an older catalog but I get the attached message. Is this all because it isn't seeing my pictures?

I suggest that you first focus on figuring out if you have a bad port, a bad external drive and/or some type of corrupted OS issue. Do you have anything else that you can use to test out the port(s) in question? Perhaps a card reader or flash drive that you can plug into the port and see if that also has issues? I would also run any diagnostic software that you may have to make sure your machine's hardware or software do not have issues.

If all is well, then I would check the external hard discs, one at a time. You do not need to open LRC, just plug them in and see if you can access the discs in Windows Explorer or from the desktop. If either or both of these external drives are not readable, then see if they can be read on another PC and try different cables as well to make sure that you do not have a cable issue. If you have definitively determined that the drives are the source of your problem, then I suggest stopping any further work and buying a new drive or two. If a new drive works with your PC, then you will want to see about downloading your Backblaze backup to the new drive.

Right now you have too many variable to know what your actual issue is that needs to be addressed. You need to rule out things out one at a time.

Check your cables. If a data loss case exists then my important first step is replace all cables. If getting cables ensure they are certified for the latest Thunderbolt / Usb standards and that they are designed for data and power.

I have seen lots of damaged cables and lots of damaged ports due to people tripping over or dragging peripherals / cables off desks.

We checked the cables...they seem to be fine. The port seems to be fine when we checked it. We tried the Seagate drive in another computer. It did a scan and said that there was no malware but couldn't check some files. Then the disk didn't show up. Disconnected and then showed up. That happened on my computer. It must be the drive. ??

I’ve ordered a new cable because Seagate needs a special one and will get it tomorrow. We shall see. Will post when we get it out. I’d be happy if that was all it was.

Well the drive does seem to be the problem. Can’t open some things. I’m scanning the whole thing to see what happens if that doesn’t work I have to have Backblaze send me a drive with all that was on that drive.

Just jumping in here..... Backblaze will FedEx a disk drive with all your stuff on it overnight (for a fee) which can be a lot quicker than downloading thousands of images over the internet. Once you get their drive, copy the files to a NEW drive of your own and return their drive to them. The rest you know from the folks who answered you above.

So I got my disk from Backblaze and it wasn't just a plug in and good to. It was encrypted and I had to download a program for it. It asked for a password which we didn't have, etc, etc. To make a long story short finally got the disk working. I'm in the process of saving all my pictures and the catalogs onto another drive. But...my catalogs all seem to be corrupted when I try them. How in the heck do I fix or make a new catalog without losing all my keywording??

Can you elaborate on "all catalogs seem corrupted"? What messages did you get? What happened when you tried to open them?

Please confirm that you used Backblaze tools and programs to decrypt the drive they sent you and to copy the info from that drive to you new owned HD.
