Okay, I used to use an iMac as my main computer and a laptop for travel. I had that workflow all ironed out. However, I decided to replace the iMac with a fast laptop and make it my do everything machine. So step one was to migrate to working that way. The iMac always was set up with the current year's photos on the internal drive and all the older ones on an external drive. Phase one was completed months ago, which means same concept. External drive has older images, with smart previews for all those images. However, I'm running into a couple of things that I'd like to change. Basically I need to have the external drive attached to print those images, or republish them on Smugmug. And when the external drive (and a time machine drive) are connected and the laptop is asleep, I have to wake it up to unmount the drives. I'm thinking a NAS system might solve those problems and I'm looking for some feedback on that idea. Testing by using the old iMac to share a folder and storing files on it has shown me that it appears to be seamless. The shared drive autoconnects if it is reachable and access is okay. If the iMac is off, then the smart previews are there. So that test was good.

So, am I missing something in my thinking? I'll continue to use the builtin drive for doing imports and storing current images and the processed, older stuff, will get migrated externally with smart previews. I'll carry a portable drive for on the road backups and use the NAS for Time Machine for internal drive back when I'm home.

Any advice from the folks currently using some network attached storage?
