Hello everyone,

Please bear with me things are in bad shape!

I was installing a new video card when windows failed to start. After alot of tinkering I finally figured out it was my boot partition on C that got corrupted, as well as the HD generally kicking the can. I had the MAJORITY of my DNGs, RAWs, and JPGs backed up. I was finally able to recover one of the iterations of the lightroom catalouge that was converted from 1.x to 2.x.

I loaded the pictures onto a different computer , openend the cat and experienced the following problems:

1. LR is missing some of my files and folders, and I am pretty sure that I am using the same folder structure as with the original catalouge. Could this be because I later converted raws to DNG in the cat but I only recovered the RAW versions? If that is the case do I just reimport them ? would this not lose my image adjustments if the XMP sidecars were not updated?

2. My collections and keywords are present in LR but ALL my adjustments, metadata changes , and labels to the files are GONE, everything is reset. I thought these were stored in the catalouge as well as the DNGs? how can I get these back?

3. This is not a problem persay but more like a possible clue to the above. When I important this lrcat, Lr asked me to convert from 1.x to 2.x which I had already done.

Running Vista 32, LR 2

Thanks so much!!!!

Correct, without updated XMPs, LR has no way of knowing what changes were made.

When you converted from 1 to 2, LR created a completely new copy of the old catalog in the new version 2 folder, renamed it, and upgraded it to version 2. The original version 1 catalog was completely untouched. I assume that's what you've found. Since it's still version 1, it needed to be upgraded again; whereupon the same process happened again.

It's not entirely clear to me from your explanation, exactly what files you recovered, and how they relate to the catalog you recovered. If you can explain that in more detail, it would be helpful.

Brad,

Thank you so much for your reply.

To answer your questions

1. Re files: I backed up most of the files themselves sans cat. The actualy files (DNGs, JPG, RAWs) are copys of the files I have been using. However they are less recent and have not been touched in months since LR1. I thought that should not matter however because the edits are stored in the catalouge correct?

2. Regarding the cat version: the lrcat was the copy that LR2 initially saved, and it still asked me to upgrade. I know this because my smart collections were still present when loading and it had the "-2" in the filename that lightroom 2 adds when upgrading.

In other words, I have used COPIES of these files with this catalouge. They show up in the browser so the files itself match up.

Despite all this the edits are GONE.

Anything else I can clarify?

Thanks again

Brad

I have a similar situation where the lrcat does not seem to work on one of my external drives. I did as i should have a long time ago (as you suggested the other day), and now have 2 backups.

I have 3 external HD's with identical copies of my catalogue and images/folder structure etc. And, as per your advise went and played with each one to ensure integrity.

E/primary external
F/secondary external
G/backup backup external

On my G/ all i get is the question mark telling me images are offline.

I have tried the following
1. trashed the lrcat on G/ and copy from E/
2. trashed the lrcat on G/ and copy from F/
3. started LR by holding ctrl and selecting the HD
4. navigated via my computer -> to the lrcat on the external drive and double clicked.

Currently have 2 working version of LR, but can't seem to get the extra back up to work.

Brad S.,

No, the pictures are not missing with quotation marks they are completely gone. It doesent even ask for the missing folders.
